i have not read ANY dostoevsky and i am a little rusty on reading in general. where do you think i should start? also related, what was your first dostoevsky you read, if you remember?

ive only read crime and punishment and notes from underground thus far, personally i would start with not Crime and Punishment like I did.

if you're trying to get back into reading (specifically russian classics) i recommend some of tolstoy's short stories: (in rough order from shortest to longest for your choosing)

what men live by

the kreutzer sonata

the cossacks

hadji murad is also veeery good but i only recommend it if you're particularly interested in that part of history (the crimean war). tolstoy is much more idle and aristocratic than dostoevsky but i find tolstoys works to be easier on the mind if you aren't a philosophy person (which i very much am not) and theyre more suited to light reading, even his longer novel anna karenina is easier to digest in small sittings than crime and punishment is

i also found that the metamorphosis was very similar to crime and punishment thematically and in writing style

I picked up c&p in middle school (?) didnt finish it because i was like 13, and then finally finished it a few years later. do not do what I did because i absolutely didnt understand it until the second time i read it.

i think of ruslit (and lots of other classics) like an acquired taste; the first handful you read you will probably be neutral about at BEST and then when you get used to the slow pacing and cultural stipulations (especially russian naming conventions) the more subtle themes and character traits start to jump out.

sorry for rambling but i adore russian literature and if you end up reading something you should totally message me or send an ask because i could talk about these for weeks. of course this is all my opinion and im not some scholarly expert or anything
