Like, Hazel found out a lot of shit about her town and community in the span of like... a day? But her mom having secret supernatural connections would probably be the most surprising.

Idk if anyone has noticed this yet (took me a 3rd playthrough to notice) but at the beginning of the game as Catfish is narrating you can see Huggin’ Molly hidden in the mountain in the foreground of the storybook, she’s watching Lacey as she drives home to Hazel 🥹🥹🥹 and its crazy bc I was wondering post-game how Huggin’ Molly knew that Lacey was in danger but playing the game again with wiser eyes really helps answer some ‘plot holes’ *heavy quotations*

And you know what, thats why I don’t trust game reviews anymore, especially by angry anti-woke white men

Anyway, PLEASE PLAY THIS GAME, and then play it again and again and again; and if you’re playing for free on Xbox Game Pass and if you can afford it, please buy the game!

South of Midnight: Chapter 1 Details and References

I've played this game like 3 times straight through. I have a problem. Here's all the little background details and references I saw in Chapter 1, massive spoilers under the cut:

A lot's going on in Hazel's room, her posters are packed with references. Lets start with the obvious:

This poster for "Fangs" is a reference to Megan Thee Stallion's "Hiss".

"More-812" is a reference to Blink-182.

Pro-Boohag propaganda.

These comic book posters allude to Hazel's upcoming adventures.

And a quick note- in chapter 2 after her first fight, Hazel says this:

You could take this to mean that there's a comic series about a superhero Weaver who fights Haints in universe, but I don't think this means anything I just think it's cute.

Hazel works at a donuts & coffee shop and plays guitar.

@/miladyconfetti on tiktok pointed out that this poster is likely a reference to Flo-Jo (Florence Griffith Joyner), a legendary track & field athlete and the fastest woman ever recorded to this day. I'm inclined to believe her because the suit is iconic like come on.

In the living room we find out Lacey has excellent taste. This picture is a reference to Annie Lee's "Blue Monday", 1985.

While I believe the one next to it, due to the style of shading and bodily proportions, is a general reference to the work of Ernie Barnes. His painting "The Sugar Shack", 1976, is what I thought of when first seeing it.

Alright I'm probably only fixating on it because I'm Mexican but THESE jars here in the back resemble a type of pottery that's very popular in New Mexico. They might be an american version of a style of pottery that comes out of Jalisco, but I'm not confident enough to say. The only english name I could find for them was "red ware pottery" and I'm unsure of the real name/style but my grandma's house is absolutely filled with these.

Is this as exclusive to NM as I think it is? Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Anyways...

The fridge magnets resemble characters we meet later on.

This might be a reach but I think this moment references Bag Lady by Erykah Badu.

And last but not least, the figures in Mrs. Pearle's house all resemble a boss fight. From left to right: Ayotunde, Two-Toed Tom, Laurent, and Huggin' Molly.

Hazel drops the Huggin' Molly figure, foreshadowing her death.

That's all I got for chapter 1. There's one more poster I didn't mention, but that's cause I couldn't think of anything about it. If it is a reference, I don't know it. Feel free to add if you got it or caught anything else I missed.
