i think my ideal tommyarthur fic (to write?) would be one that is framed by a post canon setting where they are together and alive, but this present and Being is static to the point where they also could be dead. they aren't unhappy, they are with each other, but they aren't doing anything moving forward, just a rather pleasant co-existence. that entombment neatly embodied by the january they are now living on, etc, very easy. and then all the movement, the exploration moves backwards; throughout their childhood, the missing parts in canon until the point of their departure. and then i think there would be intermittent chapters entirely focused on the mother, polly, lizzie, linda, grace, ada, which would also be about tommyarthur, obviously, but they are also just about the women moving within and without the orbit of these men. intriguing to me in the sense of the mutual impact between them, being married, related to each other, their presence enlivened them, the gendered dimension here without overt finger wagging (it's not quite about tommyarthur being noxious elements that need to be removed, they are not the root of all problems either, but they still have to go) but it's a bit like that saying goes. sometimes you hurt every woman in your life because your soulmate is your brother, nevertheless the women are significant and deserve their due.
