Wizard Wantall and the Amazing Abacus
My Little Pony comic #188
Politeness, being based upon real kindness of heart, cannot exist where there is selfishness or brutality to warp its growth. It is founded upon love of the neighbor, and a desire to be beloved, and to show love. Thus, where such pure, noble feelings do not exist, the mere forms of politeness become hypocrisy and deceit.
--"The Ladies' Book of Etiquette and Manual of Politeness" (Florence Hartley)--
Here we can see the...jewel. Most ladies have a jewel. You must ask about how to treat their jewel. They may not want you touch it. That’s fine. Love the jewel. Respect the lady.
Good News Wednesday
I could complain about 40 things today but let’s start a good news tradition.
FICO like a Boss - I got an updated FICO score from Citibank and it is true, if you have no CC debt, it really goes up. I did not think my score could get that high. Ladies, let’s measure, brag about and be concerned with our credit (instead of, say, other stupid numbers like our weight).
I cooked dinner last night - Not an unqualified success but I did it.
Reading Challenge Progress - Finally finished “The Light Between Oceans.” 5 of 30 November books, done.
Dreams - I had a dream that something I would really like to see happen, happened. Here’s to possibilities!
Investment Idea - I think I have a very good idea brewing. Can anyone educate me on REITs? All I know I learned on Veronica Mars.
Tipping - lesser known guidelines
At a diner/sit-down restaurant/eating at a bar: If your bill is under $20. Tip $5. Over $20 - 20%.
Coffee - The change from your bill or 1$. If you pay with a card, remember to throw some cash in the jar once in a while (every 3 visits).
Hotel - $2-5 a night on the table for the housekeeper. Always a few $ for bell service and/or getting you a taxi.
Salon - 15-20% (note: they say you don’t have to tip the owner, but that’s who usually works on me and I do anyway. Maybe the shampoo girl just gets a big tip that day?)
Bar - PER DRINK:$2-5 for the first drink. $1 for each drink after that.
Takeout/Delivery - 15%
Housecleaner - Always cash. $10-20 depending on frequency
House/Petsitter - Always cash. $10-20 depending on how much of a pain your pet is.
Paper delivery - I have never done this but I understand you are supposed to.
Mail delivery - Same as above. I would feel differently on both points if I were not in a huge apartment building.
Note: Where possible try to get over yourself and hand the money to the person. No envelopes.
How To Wear Gloves Like a Lady ...
Public Transit - Standing Room Only
If there is standing room only and you are standing, you may not read any longer. The space it takes to read your phone or a book is the standing space of another person.
If you are standing, it is also your duty to be able to be situationally aware so you can move if people need to get out the door. For example, your earbuds should allow you to hear someone say, "excuse me." I'll also argue that it is a good practice when the bus/train comes to a stop to look up, let go of your handhold, see if anyone needs you to move and then look to see if you can move in further to provide room to others.
