I honestly think the Lady Lucktopus battle and the following cutscene might be my favorite part of Psychonauts 2.
Lady Lucktopus, (a.k.a: 'Lucky') is a boss that represents the consequences of Raz's actions. This fight is both visually stunning, and incredibly clever in its design. Lucky towers over Raz. Her eyes spell the words "money" and "risk", the two thoughts that Raz connected in her mind to start this whole mess. Her crown is made of light bulbs, the primary projectile thrown by the "bad idea" enemies Raz first encounters at the start of the level. She pulses with neon lights, and changes colors throughout her three phases. Not to mention, she's styled after Hollis, and speaks with her voice. Every single thing that she is serves as a reminder of just who's mind he has set awry.
But defeating Lucky isn't enough to make up for what he's done. His conversation with Hollis afterwards has such raw emotion to it. He knows he has to face up to the consequences and apologize, but it's still hard for him to do at first. When Hollis starts laughing, he laughs along too, nervously, hoping he's getting off easy. That part really sticks out to me, because it's just such a 'guilty child' thing to do. Then, Raz shows incredible maturity when he expresses his remorse and shame at having violated Hollis' trust.
It's rare to see such sincerity in protagonists, especially in video games. And I think Richard Horvitz is partly to thank for that. He absolutely nails the tone of every line he's given. The game would have a lot less charm without his unique voice to bring life to its main character. The writing is half of the equation, (and the writing is incredible, don't get me wrong),but without the right voice, the lines won't hit nearly as hard as they otherwise could. Horvitz is the PERFECT fit to compliment the wonderful character writing of Tim Schafer.
Anyway, going back to the game itself, Raz still isn't entirely off the hook after his talk with Hollis. She forgives him, but Sasha has a one-on-one with him in a later scene, and really drives home the gravity of what Raz did. The damage he could have caused. I really like the way that Raz looks up at Sasha during that scene— reminding us once again that Raz is a child, who still has a lot to learn. He is quite literally looking up to everyone around him. And I just think that's really special.
If you want to see what I'm talking about, this video shows the boss fight and the full cutscene. Just look at how lovingly animated Raz's movements and expressions are, and how well Horvitz delivers the lines. It's hard not to feel a bit of that guilt they're trying to evoke, to really put you in Raz's shoes. It's fantastic.
Halloween drawing time
I had way to much fun drawing this. I listened to Lady Lucktopus' boss fight music for soph many hours while working on this but it was worth it in order to draw this dangerous card dealer as a human! Hope y'all like it

Psychonauts 2 Part 5 - The Silent Stream
A no commentary run of Psychonauts 2! I know, I know, most of you guys are here for the soothing tones of my beautiful voice - kidding not kidding. But this time around I do a quick run - we finish up Hollis Hotstreak with a boss battle, and some quick cheating at the ponies ;)
