lafranglophone reblogged your photoset and added:
are you saying that Alberta never changed provincial government since 1971?
#no wonder why they are *coughcough*redneck
yes, that’s how it’s been. They don’t call it a political dynasty for nothing.
But there are many reasons behind it beyond being rednecks (there are a lot of those too, but that’s not the only reason)
- It’s extremely difficult to change political parties in Canada, particularly in the provinces because of our ridiculously stupid voting system. We have only had four different political regimes in our 110 year history, and they all changed because of something really big like the first World War or the Great Depression. The conservatives were quite competent in their early history and stood up for us against the federal government when we were being treated unfairly by the national energy policy, and as a result they stayed in power for a long time. The only non-conservative riding in the province in past history has been where I live (Edmonton), but the number of rural ridings vastly outnumbers the urban ones and most people in rural areas tend to be the older generation while young people either hold the same ideas as their parents or move away for opportunities in cities elsewhere, or they just don’t vote at all.
- I had to vote conservative last provincial election (my first one), not because I agreed with it but because I was too afraid to split the left wing vote any further. If I hadn’t voted strategically, the Wild Rose party could have gained power in my (at the time: rural) riding. If you’ve heard anything about WR, you’ll know that they’re absolutely insane... but they’re gaining power as fast as the conservatives are losing it and that’s terrifying. Thankfully people seem to get this and are more inclined to unite under the NDP and hope the right wing splits this time instead. The conservatives are pretty much done for judging by the polls, and it’s expected that the NDP will take the north of the province while WR will take the south, hopefully with an NDP victory.
But yeah everyone is very excited because change is in the air for the first time in like a generation. It’s very important that people actually prove the projections correctly and go out and vote: if they don’t, we could end up like BC where everyone assumed one party was going to win, didn’t vote, and ended up with something terrible.
