I just started watching Vikings and have just finished season two. I am thirsty so please quench my thirst with requests that only involve season one and two. Please no spoilers!

And this is why Science Fiction/Fantasy is my favourite genre. These were very good women to look up to when I was little

Finally finished season 5p2 Vikings and I really need to get some thoughts out. (Spoilers)

Overall I thought it was a huge improvement on the last one. I thought it had a solid ending that not only completed some character arcs but set us up for interesting things to come. I also liked the characters much more this season.

I loved Torvi and Ubba’s relationship. It was really forced before but I think the actors did a great job of making it feel natural and sweet this time. I also loved the scene where Ubba is healing from his wounds and Torvi is lieing in bed with him. It’s a nice quiet moment between them. (Film rule: show don’t tell 👍)

I also like that Bjorn became the new king of kattakat. Both he and Ubba honored Ragnar in some way whether it was achieving his dream or taking kattakat back. Bjorn his first son, becoming king and talking to Ragnar was a good arc and gave closure yet left room for more. Also like that Lagatha, Ubba, Torvi and Hvitserk are together. So there is only one family fued going on cause I’m tired of that plot.

I thought Hvitserks arc was well done and intergrated well into Ivar slowly becoming more and more monsterous. Also I like that their framing Ivar as less sympathetic. He is a good villain cause you can understand why he is the way he is but they finally draw the line by putting everyone against him. I’m glad they stopped excusing his cruelty. A character can be popular for being interesting but Ivar is not someone to look up to. Ex. We understand Thanos but he isn’t framed as a hero because whatever the reasons his actions are wrong.

As for the saxons Aylesworth and Aethelflead are flat but I loved both Alfred and Aethelred. They are both well rounded and likable. I didn’t like what happened to Aethelred though. Aethelreds arc was learning to accept Alfred as king even though his whole life part of his identity was that he was the next king. He had darker sides but was only particularly cruel once while talking to Judith. (Which I think was put just to help justify her poisoning) He doesn’t go through with the assassination and he seems to be coming to terms with Alfred as king but then Judith murders him. Which I hate for multiple reasons.

One is that as a fan I grew to really like Athelred as I think we were supposed to. But also because it’s really cruel seemingly for the sake of drama. Judith and his relationship is normal story conflict, but poisoning him seems out of character to me. Judith has killed before but killing your child is completely different. Then we are expected to feel sad at her death like 2 episodes later. And the fact that they used cancer, a disease millions are still affected by, as a way of manipulating you to feel bad is low.

His death was also unnecessary painful. Typically a death that cruel goes to a character that is equally terrible or it plays into character development or plot development but all it did was kill Judith when she could have died much more honorably. Both Judith and Aethelred deserved better. Which is another Vikings problem. They don’t treat their characters well. Heahmund died to make Lagatha go crazy which was just sad to watch. We watched Floki loose everything and then some. Ragnars down fall had some good last moments but just became sad. Helga and Siggys death seem to be just to get Floki and Rollo certain places. Those are just to name a few. Every old character has either had a tragic (painful) death or is a ghost of who they used to be.

I hated the conversation between Rollo, Bjorn and Lagatha. As the audience for all we know this is their last conversation and it’s kinda framed that way. These are original characters from season one. And instead of at least bitter sweet closure we get more conflict. I’m not saying don’t have cause and effect or conflict in your show but there is a pattern.

Despite this, the positives out way the negatives this time and I hope they keep heading in that direction.
