I know this is from Australia but when I first saw the words “Victorian man” all I could think of was this:

Honestly can’t even pretend to be surprised that tumblr loved Gabon & Tobias. Did they expect us to see a reckless cocky dark haired character look at an autistic coded character for two minutes and hell “HE’S MINE!” with no further elaboration and expect us not to be obsessed? Somebody here made the mistake of endorsing my theatre nerdiness so now I’m back on my bullshit thinking about the blink-and-you-miss-it reference to Company in episode 7.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, in episode 7 when Kevin gets up to leave, Tobias says “Where are you going?”, to which Kevin replies “Barcelona”. This is (presumably) a reference to the song “Barcelona” from the Sondheim musical Company. It’s a sort of comedic call-and-response song between a flight attendant and their on again/off again partner who has struggled to make a real commitment in any of their relationships but is coming to terms with longing for a partner (just not the flight attendant). And while it’s probable that this reference is just a cheeky theatre reference in a theatre-centric show, my brain is reading very far into it.

I just think it’s so interesting to have that very specific reference used in this situation. The whole song is two lovers, who rarely see each other (like how Kevin and Tobias haven’t actually seen each other in over a year), going back and forth trying to flirt but completely misunderstanding each other, accusing each other of being angry, and getting genuinely frustrated as a result. They’re not a good match even though they do genuinely seem to enjoy each other’s company. It’s such a parallel for Kevin and Tobias, but in Étoile this reference is used specifically to close the book on their relationship, so that Tobias and be with Gabin. Theatre nerds who caught the reference get a little extra nod to how Tobias’ last relationship was with someone he just didn’t mesh with, especially in terms of communication, as he’s moving forward towards a relationship with someone who seems to understand him flawlessly.

AND and and, just because I think it’s neat to point out, the next song that Bobby (the one with the commitment issues) sings is “Being Alive”, one of the most famous Sondheim songs. It’s literally the main character realizing they want to commit to someone, even if it means embracing vulnerability and the uncertainty of love, and letting someone see the best and worst parts of you, and doing the same for them. It’s literally Gabias, it’s literally the tipping point in their relationship. This little Barcelona reference is the precursor to the finale of this arch in three Gabias relationship

Another beautiful thing about Tobias’ character is that he makes jokes. Like I never see autistic characters make jokes in tv shows!!! They’re always humourless robots and it pisses me off because autistic people are denied their humanity every single goddamn day!!

I curious to know if anyone else feels this way. In hopes of me feeling less pathetic.

I graduated in 2021 with a focus mainly in film. I’m from a rural town where there aren’t many jobs let alone film industry jobs. I have no connections. Because of Covid I feel like I didn’t get the complete education I was promised, but I can’t afford to go back to school and understandably people don’t have time to teach me in the field. I can’t afford to move. Because of ai and streaming the industry is totally different anyway.

Everyone in my life is giving me advice about an industry they don’t understand. It’s true that creatives have always kinda had to learn just by doing, but that’s getting harder as the economy gets worse. So it feels like all I can do is teach myself everything in my spare time and become a mini influencer. I don’t want to be an influencer.

I find that people who struggle with staying alive the most usually have the best takes on life.

It's a common misconception that suicidal people hate life and everything about it but from what I can tell they seen to appreciate or value it more. Be more fascinated by the dandelion growing through the sidewalk and carefully step around it. People that live easily call it a weed and move on.

I think people leave out the part of Dazai that sees humans as a wonder, they make him cold or resentful towards them when what he does every time he finds someone bright and alive is cling to them. Even going as far as to submerge himself into a place that's full of humans who are the equivalent of plants growing through cement knowing he won't feel like he fits there, and people say he hates humanity.

Of course we know that he does fit there because if any character has been growing up through the cracks to see only the smallest bit of sunlight its Dazai.

It's a weird garden they have growing but I think it's pretty that way.
