The legend of the red water lilies

Evil, jealousy and finally murder. 

We have all heard about ‘’trolls’’ and ‘’fairies’’ that live deep in the Swedish forests. 

The trolls play hide and seek with children who later get lost in the woods. The fairies on the other hand attract significantly older people with their dazzling beauty. Additionally we have heard of ‘’näcken’’ this violin playing character that allures children and others into the waters and eventually drowns them.

Nevertheless not as many know the legend of the red water lily in tiveden.The name tiveden (God's woods) comes from the fact that the wood is so dense that no human can walk through it, additionally, nowadays, it makes out the border between two provinces. 

Vit Näckros

In Sweden water lilies are white with the exception of those in ‘’fagertarn’’in this lake they are. Surprisingly red.  According to the legend the reason for the water lilies colour change from white to red is the evil of humans. 

Röd Näckros

In ancient times on the shore of fagertarn there was a small cottage where a man lived with his daughter. They survived by fishing and hunting. The daughter was amazingly beautiful as a result of this she had a great number of admirers but one special young man had won her heart.

One day when they were rowing together in fagertarn, another admirer suddenly caught a glimpse of them in the middle of the lake and got very jealous. 

He got his knife and swam out to the boat, where he stabbed her and consequently killed her. 

This is the reason why the white water lily became red. The blood gave the white flowers their red colour and after this struggle to win a ‘’fager tarnas’’(beautiful girl’s ) heart the lake has since been called ‘’Fagertarn’’.
