An Intimate Photographic Series Glimpses the Lives of the Children Who Fish in Ghana’s Lake Volta
Useless fact: The Volta lake is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world and it was formed as a result of the construction of Ghana's primary source of electricity, the Akosombo dam. It has a storage capacity of 153 billion cubic metres.

An estimated 20,000 children are enslaved within the fishing industry on Lake Volta in Ghana (International Labour Organization). Children as young as five are sold to human traffickers and forced to work as fishermen for up to 12 hours a day, seven days a week without adequate rest or food.
Recently, one of our team members visited Lake Volta. She shares,
"It was surreal realizing that a land so beautiful, a lake so vast and eerily peaceful, could at the same time hold some of the world's darkest injustices. Coming face to face with the reality of what these children experience on the lake every day has forever wrecked my heart.”
Learn more about our plans to expand our anti-trafficking efforts in Ghana over the coming year. Click here to read more about the trafficking taking place on the lake and how you can be an instrumental part of our strategy to help stop the trafficking of these innocent children.
Good morning, Africa.

#INSPIRED: Meet Kobena. He’s 15 years old and has been a slave for 2/3 of his life.
While other children were playing hopscotch and learning to read, Kobena was diving into the treacherous waters of Lake Volta to untangle fishing nets. Thankfully, Challenging Heights, in partnership with Made In A Free World, was able to successfully rescue him! Today, he is safe, receiving the education and therapy he needs at the CH rehabilitation center.
SHARE his story, WATCH our video, and consider a DONATION to free more children like Kobena here: madeinafreeworld.com/ghana.
