Florida Asian Things
Ok, so this might actually end up being a series but it’s something I’ve actually put a lot of thought into. I know Asians from all over the state of Florida and there are a few things that most if not all know or can identify with:
1) Lollicup. Every Florida Asian has at least heard of Lollicup. Most have been there. Most know of the new Bobacup in Tampa too. Many people have met Nam, the owner of the Florida monopoly on trendy Asian bubble tea places (lollicup and bobacup). Most are friends with Nam on facebook and follow him on instagram, either through lollicup or bobacup. The reason why lollicup seems to be more popular than bobacup is:
2) Every Florida Asian knows someone at UF. And that person is usually Asian. Actually, at least one of those people is Asian. There is no way an Asian only knows one person at UF and that person is not Asian. Like, that’s where they all go. My white friends at UF ask me why I didn’t go there because that’s just where we go if we can’t go out of state. It’s very likely as well that the Asian you know at UF also goes to CCF (Centerpoint Christian Fellowship), and might have some involvement with the DramaGators, but neither of those are guaranteed. CCF mostly because they all go to:
3) Lake Yale. This one might be restricted more toward the Chinese and Koreans, but most Florida Asians have heard of Lake Yale in some way shape or form. You might have been yourself or know someone who went or have just heard of it in general, but you’ve heard of it. For those of you who don’t know, Lake Yale is a Christian camp that all of the Chinese Churches and Korean Churches (unfortunately not this year though) of Florida rent out for a weekend (separate weekends, of course) near the beginning of summer and have a retreat. That’s where the majority of Florida’s Asian networking is done. That and at UF (and a bit at FSU), and between UF and FSU’s AASUs, but Lake Yale spans all age groups and cities. This contributes largely to the fact that:
4) Every Florida Asian seems to know every other Florida Asian (by at most two steps of relation). Translated: pick a random Asian out of any city in Florida from around your age group and either you know them or you know someone who does. Disclaimer, this does not necessarily include or exclude Asians who were adopted into families and raised white or are so fresh-off-the-boat that they are also far-off-the-grid.
I hope you guys can relate to something in this post and I hope that none of this was offencive to anyone. Until next time!
