One of my Valentine’s Day flash designs from this year. Based from the sculpture “Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss”, by Antonio Canova. Thanks Dora! Cupid was set on Psyche by his enraged mother Venus, jealous of her beauty and Goddess-like reverence and affection by the local people. She ordered him to make her fall in love with the lowest of all human beings, which backfired when he fell in love with Psyche the moment he set eyes on her. Ashamed, Cupid hid his new found affections. Psyche’s father, in despair at seeing his daughter unmarried despite her beauty, consulted an oracle who predicted terrible disasters if the girl were not abandoned ASAP on a rock, where a monster would carry her off. Alone and trembling on said rock, a concealed Cupid proceeded to rescue Psyche and whisk her away in secret to a beautiful marble palace covered in precious stones, raped her a lot, never revealing his identity to Psyche. Surprisingly enamoured by her mysterious (and pretty eager) hero and lover, she found out one night for it to be no other than Cupid himself. He fled upon her discovery, and the desperate Psyche set out in search for her lost love. The jealous and enraged Venus set upon her terrible ordeals and tormented her greatly. When tricked by her to carry a jar filled with “Sleep of the Innermost Darkness” from the Underworld, Psyche’s curiosity got the better of her and she opened it. As soon as she breathed in the terrible fumes of the jar, she fell into a deep, deathlike sleep. Seeing her lying motionless, Venus’s son Cupid rushed to her and touched her gently with the tip of his arrow, to make sure she was not dead. This is the moment caught by the sculptor: Cupid lifts his beloved Psyche in a tender embrace, his face close to hers. Psyche lets herself sink slowly backwards, languorously taking her lover’s head between her hands. Moved by such devotion, the gods finally grant Cupid Psyche’s hand. I think that’s how the story goes anyway, I’m no expert. Couple goals, right?! But seriously... It was so fun to tattoo this.
