“What's my favorite piece?” Asked by @PHXMagazine in 2015 Lalo Cota responded "The next one." His work clearly reflects the influence of Chicano low-rider culture, but instead of the spray paint favored by many of his peers Cota prefers to wield brush and roller. In any case, wherever "his next one" is, Cota's blending of vibrant color and bold but playful imagery will no doubt continue to infuse the work with positive energy and explain why the self-taught father of two has become one of the most loved muralists in Phoenix. This luchadore inspired work sits behind N 16th St Silvana Salcido Esparza restaurant @TheBarrioCafe—ground zero for the Calle 16 Arts District. Sitting on a north-facing wall in a somewhat protected alcove behind the restaurant has undoubtedly helped, but after almost 4 years this 2015 work still looks like new.  @lalocota/  @calle16phx/

“DAY OF THE DEAD”

Several years ago Lalo Cota expressed his concern to @PHXmagazine that public art for the masses “tends to be pleasingly sanitized” while street art’s whole reason for being is to spread a calculated, often provocative message.” Like so many that have been painting on the streets for many years Cota has made the transition to strictly legal work but, despite preferring brushes and rollers to the traditional spray paint of his peers, his work has never lost its connection to his roots. Originally from Sinaloa, Mexico, Cota is inspired by Chicano folklore and lowrider culture and often includes statements about his Arizona home. While not itself a political piece, it’s only appropriate then that this wall was done in Phoenix at @theBarrioCafe for @calle16phx, an organization started by Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza—initially to bring artists together in response to Arizona’s 2010 passage of immigration bill SB1070.  @lalocota

My gift of the day was having Leilani read to me from this amazing book “The Myth of Race” detailing the vast scientific evidence that there is no race but the human race. Rather enjoyed being home today. It had been a long time since she had read to me.
