her afternoon had been calm, and she had been enjoying this fact.  solomon and gildarts were out, had taken cana and ultear to the theatre, gray was around somewhere, and lyon was usually not the kind to get into trouble.  usually.  because while she had been making good progress on reading the ever-growing tower of books in her study, he had been out and about, apparently getting involved in --- shenanigans.

closing her book and looking at her utterly unrepentant son, ur groaned.  there was a reason why she had gotten the text, informing her of the incident, but it was not like she enjoyed being the strict parent very much.  but solomon had been a prankster in his youth as well, and someone had to do the job and so it was her. ‘ ‘ lyon, ’ ’ she said as she resolved to take care of this one as well before he could charm and worm his way out of this one the moment solomon got back, ‘ ‘ no, i don’t think so.  i don’t believe that what happened is fun. especially not since most of those plants were mine. ’ ’ she sighed as she watched her kid shrink and almost, she wanted to soften, but she could not. ‘ ‘ i expect you to fix the flowers, and i expect you to apologise to ms styrne for the incident.  personally. ’ ’

‘ one grows used to things , even if , sometimes one shouldn’t . ’

kora regarded lyon over the rim of her tea cup and sighed. it had been getting late in the evening, and this was the consequence. sherry, please come collect your husband, he’s getting philosophical, she thought as she nudged the little tray with cookies into the ice mage’s direction. this was not a conversation she was expecting to have and she did not think this was a conversation she was ever ready for, but … here she was. sitting in the guild hall, face - to - face with her guild master’s husband as he felt philosophical and she was starting to feel how long the day had been in her bones.

‘ ‘ lyon, ’ ’ she said warmly before taking another sip of her tea, ‘ ‘ we all made our peace with — with events and decisions, even ones we could barely bear. and … we can talk about the weight, about how heavy it was. how heavy it still is. ’ ’

she did not have to mention the war, it was still in everyone’s mind, in everyone’s bones. for her, it was carved into both her forearms — the ones she had broken in a nasty fall, the ones that still bore faint scars, but what were two clean fractures compared to what others had suffered? what others still had to endure? it was nothing.

             dual wintertide youth & moonlit adventure; the long-awaited reunion would finally shine down. an unbecoming yearning waned and waxed for the fairy as he held another in his thoughts (in his head & in his heart). subtle rhythmic steps down a rosy cobblestone trail carried him closer & closer to he who promises a roller-coaster of emotion with each and every seemingly trivial interaction. ardor, anger, soul, spirit; the bewitching brilliance of the full moon above would forebode it all.

             a gentle waft of magnolias tickled gray’s nose as muted cherry blossom hues leisurely swathed an otherwise snowy complexion. ❛  spring already, huh?  ❜ he muttered under his breath, as the aerial ballet of flower petals heralded the seasons long-awaited renewal. though glacial winds & polar region terrain uphold a special space in gray’s heart, the winter fairy has come to appreciate the unique earmarks of each time of year. nevertheless, half-naked he strut (nipples pointy & proud), embracing faint frigid breezes with a shameless grin hung taut on childlike mien.

             with our heroes destination in sight & drawing ever near, he guises gaiety with ease & dons a steely mug (granted some reluctance is genuine, to say the least). notwithstanding gray’s boisterous acts of infamy engaged upon with comrades, his withdrawn demeanor has been known to remain a go-to, under certain circumstances. with a casual hop-step-jump up to door, gray keeps his hands huddled deep in his pants pockets while leisurely knocking on the door with his foot, & allowing one last drawn-out breathe to escape.

"happy birthday, cherie." lyon greeted. it was not the first time he said it, but it was a GOOD day nonetheless. he kissed her cheek let out a contented sigh. "the twins are in their nap for now and i requested adam to them for a bit, shall we indulge on a fine lunch this beautiful autumn afternoon?" he already had the seats and restaurant picked. and her gift was in his pocket, a bracelet that had all their familiy's birthstones on it.

there had been a time when her birthdays had been more exciting — when she had been a teenager and almost every year had brought a new milestone. the older she had gotten, the less exciting birthdays had become — and the more stressful, too. planning parties and ensuring that they did go off without a hitch was  hard work,  and sherry had not once envied those who made a living with it.

lyon had planned her birthday, there was little doubt about, and she was reaping the benefits. she had woken up to her favourite breakfast and her husband’s assurance that today, she only had to adore their children — an easy task on any day. she was grateful, as always, that lyon had her back, that he was supportive of her and her choices.

‘‘ thank you, love. ’’ she leaned up against him, pressing a tender kiss of her own against his jaw.  ‘‘ and yes, that sounds like a wonderful idea. ’’

lyon nudged kora and nodded at the two three-month olds wiggling themselves on the floor. "mari, as you know, has begun exploring everything. one of her favorite things to do as of recently is bite jules' foot. at first sherry and i were concerned, but it seems all this does is make jules laugh. and then they both start laughing." as if they knew their papa was talking about It mari did just that. she bit onto jules' foot and her brother began to laugh. "isn't that precious?"

it was a little known fact  ( though what was even widely known about her, anyway? )  but kora had a soft spot for children. she was good with them, too, something that had been useful to her before she had stopped being a kindergarden teacher in exchange for becoming a mage. sometimes, she almost missed it — especially when neil was embracing his usual, terrible self — but then she remembered that she had almost cried too often for her to be able to justify staying on this path. her mother had been right when she had told her that no matter how much she enjoyed some parts of it, her job should not make her sad quite that often.

“ he really seems to love it, ” kora replied quietly as she set aside her tea cup and allowed her pensive gaze to rest on the twins for a bit. sherry and lyon had been the first couple she knew fairly well to become parents, but she figured that they would not be the last. and sometimes, she almost caught herself … considering things she had never never given much thought in the past.

she had never thought about settling down, about having a family when she had been younger. her mother’s worries and concerns had seeped into her, had taught her more caution than most would deem to have been necessary. most, however, did not have the same worldview kora had. what her mother had been … concerned about for as long as she had known her had always been real. and kora was rather alive and more wary than most than careless and dead. 

but what had kept her alive had kept her at a distance from others. for a long time, she had not thought that having genuine relationships with others would ever be in the cards for her. but here she was now, talking to someone who was not simply a colleague but almost a friend. unlike most people she knew, she had softened when she had grown older, had outgrown her bitterness. she did not want it back.

“ and isn’t it hilarious that despite all the baby toys people got for them, this is what they choose to do? ”

lyon blinked at her and then looked away. even now she was still ... he let himself smile even if it was a small one. "you know i don't have need for a scarf. the cold does not bother me." did he know he was quoting a disney movie? no.

she had wanted to forget the movie, but it seemed like she would not be allowed this luxury. what made her almost roll her eyes was that in all likelihood, lyon did not even know what he had just quotes. still, sherry tsk-ed at him, then she shook her head and went back to carefully tying the scarf around his neck, the knot almost … fashionable. then, she took a step back and sighed. 

“ i do know,” she said as she reached for her own scarf, “ but with temperatures as low as they are, people will wonder why you aren’t dressed — properly. ”

she had had similar conversations with other gods in the past; for some reason, not everyone was as good as her when it came to masquerading as a human being. and while there were surely moments when one  wanted  humans to realise that one was …  different,  but there was a time and place for this, and the local supermarket around noon was neither the time nor the place for something like that.

to arden, to sherry, past relationships were ghosts, all too often. and theirs was a ghost that had never understood that it was supposed to sleep peacefully in the grave they had banished it to before the story had been over. it had been the only way, then, but she had still lived to regret it. she had been haunted by their almost for more than hundred years, had not been allowed to forget.

she had not wanted to forget, either. at the end of the day, she was her father’s daughter, and he had mastered the art of picking a love, a knife  ( there was really not much of a difference, not really )  and twisting it in one’s guts. everyone picked their own poison, and her father’s poison was … she did not really know, could not really name it. it was not quite love, but it was a cousin of love. maybe hope.

she was not sure which path she was chosen, but it had been the right one, probably. after all, it had taken her there — sitting on the windowsill and listening to lyon again. it was something she would once have thought to be impossible. she had hoped that time could mend the things they had had to leave alone, but she had seen too many shattered hopes to place much on such hopes.

never had she been happier to have been proven wrong.

“ of course we were. ” the words came easy, but that was hardly a surprise. she had never been one to mince her words. she had never been one to play games, either. such a thing was beneath her. “ we were naive, certainly, but we were hopeful, too. ”
