hibiki laughed and took yet another sip of a rare drink he allowed himself. some days would always be lighter than others and this was no different, yet time spent with kora and adam (separate and all together) were already quickly being sorted as great days. maybe it was pessimistic to think: i know i’ll look back fondly at these times, but hibiki was by nature, optimistic and therefore he thought it was more of a promise for more.
“i’ve never been ashamed to be called shameless, kora dear.” hibiki all but purred. he did love a bit of irony. he sighed—dramatically, of course—and then added, “i suppose you must, hm? it’s alright; he’ll probably send me some nice coffee and i never complain about that.” hibiki rubbed at his chin thoughtfully, a conspiracy coming to him. “he may even accuse us of working together to join our side. our charm added together may do the trick, yet he is stubborn. it’ll be fun to see where this goes, no?”
‘ ‘ all i want is for him not to die of a heart attack anytime soon, ’ ’ kora muttered under her breath as she ran a hand through her hair. beneath all her jests about adam’s coffee habit, it was rooted in concern for his health. nevertheless, a slow smirk grew on her face as she looked away from hibiki and instead of following her shadowed thoughts, she allowed herself to have this moment, this game.
lifting her hand to twirl a strand of her hair around her forefinger, she moved slowly and with significant deliberation. ‘ ‘ and--- you know, when i thought about being part of a conspiracy when i was younger, i thought i would at least be bringing down the government or something, ’ ’ she said with a shrug, ‘ ‘ though i did not expect to have a co-conspirator as handsome as you on my side. ’ ’

he quickly took a cookie (these were rather good as well, but he wondered if he should be indulging in this much sweets, truly, he was being spoiled) and chewed on it as he awaited for the tea secrets. in the end, he swallowed his cookie quickly so that it would be easier to smile. hibiki tapped the tabletop and nodded. “well, i suppose that is the secret, hm? knowledge on water temperature is one thing but your charm…well, that certainly explains it.” he took another sip of said tea to wash down the delightful cookie. in jest he added, “don’t go telling everyone your secrets. i have an important reputation to uphold and tea enjoyer is not part of it.”
she laughed quietly as she shifted in her seat, pulling one leg up against her chest and resting her cheek against the knee. it was always a pleasure to see someone she cared for enjoy their food; in bosco, there were many sayings about love’s interconnection with food and faintly, she recalled that there had been a rather clumsy embroidery of one such saying above her mother’s stove for a time before sofia had had too close a brush with bosconian secret services and it had disappeared. ‘ ‘ you are shameless, dear, ’ ’ she responded with a delighted scoff as she rolled her eyes at him. ‘ ‘ and i’ll have to tell adam --- my pride dictates it. he may be a lost cause, but he should know that not everyone is, especially not one as charming as you. ’ ’

chaoticor / hibiki lates.
hibiki leaned back and felt rather … smug was it? about the attention he was currently receiving. he wasn’t normally one to smug about it, but he felt it appropriate for now. there must be something behind the scenes that he was not yet privy to. and this only intrigued him more. he was a curious person ever since he was a little boy reading every single book he could get his hands on while his aunty mom worked. in a way, he still was that boy but now instead of books he was getting reads on people.
“blendy-san is quite a good judgement on character and thus, i find no room for arguments there.” hibiki said. he tended to look at the engagement in a more positive light: sherry blendy did not end up marrying ren and that was for the better certainly. and any other time he spent with her outside of that context he has enjoyed even if it felt like a little betrayal to ren at times.
his smile was probably that of the cat who got the cream as he nodded. “of course, kora-san.” he practically purred. oh, if this was how it was going to be then hibiki was definitely interested in whatever it was going on behind the scenes. he could try and poke and prod for more, a clarification—anything. but what was a cat without the thrill of the hunt? a hunt probably not fitting for a pegasus but that was besides the point.
“a date it is, and one i look forward to whenever we can come upon an agreement.” hibiki informed her. he continued to smile as he effortlessly took out his lacriphone and opened his calendar app and took a faux glance at it before he looked over at kora. “before we get into the nitty gritty details, i suppose now is only the proper moment to request your number?”
ah, he was not the only one who was quite satisfied with himself, and why should he not? ideally, this game would have not just one but three winners in the end for no matter how much she enjoyed their bout, she did wish that adam was there with them and not somewhere, probably having been accosted by all-too-curious mages. alas, there were some compromises she had to accept, even if she was not necessarily a fan of them. she tucked her hair back behind her ears as she smiled brightly back at him, her eye colour settling into a less obnoxious shade of red.
it was just as easy to retrieve her lacriphone from the pocket of her jacket and to open up a fresh contact. when this new technology had been first released, there had been jokes about how a guild as old and esteemed ( which kora had taken to mean old-fashioned ) would not be able to adapt to the new technology, but given that kora had personally caught the most senior serpents among their number text during a particularly boring guild meeting, she was inclined to argue that whoever had come up with that story knew very little about her guild --- which was much better than the other option, that someone was enjoying a laugh at expense of the guild.
‘ ‘ your polite request has been granted, of course, ’ ’ she replied with a smirk as she offered him her own phone. ‘ ‘ just put in your name and your number, maybe your birth date if you feel daring~ and i’ll do the same in return? unless you’d prefer to handle this differently? ’ ’
he was good, as she had expected from someone with his credence, but she did not think that she was outmatched. no, this was a fun exchange between equals. excellent. she was not yet sure if she liked the lack of inquiry into adam, however --- they must have had a moment during their mission, no? or had hibiki correctly deduced what her game was?
“ feel free to say hi whenever you like ” from hibiki
now --- kora was not new to the game. she knew the rules, she knew how flirtatious banter worked, thank you very much. he was from a guild that practiced debate as the art form that it was, after all, and lamia scale had weaponised words for centuries. hibiki’s opening move was strong, as expected from a highly-esteemed member of blue pegasus, and she smiled brightly as she studied his face for a moment. adam had made a good call, she had to tell him that, again, when she actually returned to zinnia.
‘ ‘ oh hibiki, ’ ’ kora said as she leaned back against the door frame to look up at him with lilac eyes while her fingers toyed with the straps of her bag, ‘ ‘ unless you get up very early, i’d advise you to take that back. ’ ’
she was in a guild with people who had sleep schedules that were cause for genuine concern, but even so, she often beat at least some of them to the guild hall. the notable exceptions were those who had, like her, keys such as sherry or lyon, but she did maintain that they simply did not count for the purpose of this game. kora liked the idea of having a chance at being the first one there without having to camp outside of the guild, for heaven’s sake.
running a hand through silky tresses, she winked. ‘ ‘ that being said --- we get up early in case you’re ever in zinnia at six in the morning and have time to spend before the next train comes, ’ ’ she added with a serious nod.

“ don’t hold back for my sake ” / levy 🤔
kora smiled from her spot by the door as she looked at the younger woman, at the one who was now replacing lahar. the sadness that gave her thoughts a greyish blue tinge was not quite unexpected --- she might not have known the bespectacled man well but he had been the one who had all but ordered her that if her former girlfriend would make contact, she should contact the council immediately. he had also been the one who had debriefed her far more often than strictly necessary in the past when she had worked with the council, and she . . . she supposed she would miss him, in a way.
she could only hope that levy mcgarden would appreciate her lengthy, detailled reports as well because if the transformation mage knew herself at all, she knew that she was not very likely to shorten her reports, not when she had been taught to always include everything so that she could refer back to her own reports when she stumbled over a question later.
‘ ‘ very well, mcgarden-san, ’ ’ she said as she fully stepped into the room and squared her shoulders as she dropped one copy of the report onto the young woman’s desk. ‘ ‘ though i have to warn you --- my reports are infamous for their length. but you are in luck, i am meeting jura in an hour for tea. ’ ’ for tea and for information, she corrected herself as her smile remained bright on her face. ‘ ‘ so today, i cannot take up your entire afternoon. ’ ’

@kalamiascope liked for a starter from hibiki!
hibiki peered down to the cup in his hands and then flickered his gaze right back up to the woman before him. she certainly was a wonder, wasn’t she? he’s never … cared much for tea before. and yet, here, he felt a new appreciation for the mystic and old art of tea making.
“i can say with full honesty here — this is the first time i’ve fully appreciated tea. how did you do it?”
looking at her own cup, kora smiled. she might never have made adam see the benefits of a good cup of tea, the man just preferred his coffee to a worrying degree, but others could still be introduced to it. ‘ ‘ i do have an unfair advantage, if you are asking me how i manage to get the tea just right almost every time, ’ ’ she admitted freely as she nudged the small plate of cookies towards him once more. ‘ ‘ much of how tea tastes is decided by the temperature of the water. i never set out to study water magic, at least not beyond being able to heat it to the precise temperature i want. if you are asking me how i made you appreciate it, well, i’d like to credit my charm there. ’ ’
[ entwine] - adam
HER MOTHER LIKED ADAM. this should be enough to calm kora’s frazzled nerves as her mother was, for understandable reasons, the sort to eye her significant others with sharp eyes and a significant amount of . . . caution, to put it nicely, but sometimes, it was only more unsettling that her mother called adam dear and had prepared coffee. sofia bellezza was a complicated woman and her daughter would be always the first to state this fact --- and kora had spent years trying to figure out what made her mother tick, how to navigate her moods ( not that her mother was the moody sort; she would not have lasted as long in the spy business as she had if she were ). at first, she had wondered if something about adam had reminded the older bellezza of kora’s father and that this explained the unexpected fondness, but angelo had died long before his daughter could have formed memories of him --- and from her mother’s stories, he had had a rebellious streak.
a rebel with a cause, always, her mother had stressed, many times, and kora squinted as she looked at her partner as he sat next to her on her mother’s couch. there were much better terms to describe her adam than rebellious. he was too patient, too calm to fit the ever so romantic image of the rebel, of the revolutionary --- though she could not deny that he would strike a handsome figure with loose hair and a sabre . . . maybe she had read too many historical novels as of late.
but what mattered was not why kora’s mother liked adam. ideally, the serpent knew, the answer would be because he makes me happy, but the mother was nowhere as sentimental as her daughter because she had never been allowed to be. nevertheless, kora treasured the book mage’s companionship, the way he made her feel safe even when she was exposed, how he laughed even when she took a bit too long to get to the punchline. ( and he had such a nice laugh, too. ) he was a good man, from the golden crown of his head to the sole of his feet, and kora knew how difficult it could be to find good people that she also happened to be attracted to.
his grasp on her hand startled her and she flushed crimson as she felt her mother raise an eyebrow from across the room where she was searching the cupboard for her favourite teapot. or rather: her current favourite. kora smiled as she turned her head towards adam, mouthing a i’ll tell you later and squeezing his hand back. sitting in her mother’s living room with the man she trusted, she was happy. wholly, entirely happy.
‘ ‘ i’m glad we’re here, ’ ’ she said as she counted the laughter lines on his face, finding that there were more today than there had been the last time she had counted. ‘ ‘ and thankful you agreed to accompany me. ’ ’
word prompts / accepting / @lamiatomed.
hope iʼm not just a blog to you but a problematic bisexual too
prior to joining lamia scale in x784, kora was a kindergarten teacher in era. she rather enjoyed her job as she always had a soft spot for children ( if not for their parents as many of them were high-ranking officials at the magic council ) and at the time, she even liked living in era despite the misgivings she would develop later in life. perhaps because at the time, she was dating one ultear milkovich of the magic council.
the relationship was fun --- the duo of transformation mages were having a grand time with different looks --- and kora loved to have somebody around who could give expert opinions without being her mother, but when ultear went rogue, so to speak, things were a fair deal less fun as kora was questioned several times by the remains of the magic council about what she had known ( nothing ) before being given the order to immediately consult with the rune knights, should ultear contact her. which she did not.
all too eager to leave era behind, kora wrapped up her broken heart and her business in era before setting out for zinnia to join lamia scale, entirely unaware that her ex-girlfriend’s former pawn had also recently joined the guild. had she known, well, she might have thrown caution to the wind and joined another guild. both dahlia and cornus town were known to be quite beautiful cities, after all.
“I never thought I’d see the day. Or night. Whatever.”
kora grimaced as she looked at the mage to her left for a moment. this situation was hardly ideal, but what situation since the war had been? rubbing her temples and sighing deeply, she let her gaze return to the door that had been slammed shut. ‘ ‘ despite what may be commonly believed, jura-sama’s bottomless patience is not, in fact, bottomless, ’ ’ she said after a moment.
in the corner of her eye, she spotted a silvery-pink blur movement --- sherry and vastia were on their feet now, following after their former guild mate. this was probably for the best, she decided as she focused on eucliffe again, this time even managing a smile. she was, after all, the best her guild had to offer when it came to playing pretend. ‘ ‘ i would say that even a worm will turn, but that would be an insult to him, ’ ’ she said as she folded her hands in her lap. ‘ ‘ i am mostly surprised it took so long for him to leave --- some of the topics discussed were quite inane. ’ ’
* HADES.
“Oh come on, it’s not that bad, is it?”
kora had always had a soft spot for kids and yes, she knew that chelia was a teenage girl and would thus probably hate to be thought of as a child, but she was also the youngest member of their guild. and unlike some people, kora was nothing if not subtle when it came to being softer on chelia than she was on anyone else, aside from adam who got special treatment for very different reasons. and looking at the somewhat distraught young god slayer now, she smiled. there was a lot of sherry in the girl, even if the older blendy did not seem to see it. kora might have joined after sherry’s return, but some stories had . . . stuck around.
‘ ‘ training accidents happen, chelia, even to the best of us. ’ ’ she beckoned the girl to come along as she nudged open the door to the infirmary. ‘ ‘ and i have to take a look at this so i don’t get into trouble along with you, but i think you’ll get to run along with some candy. ’ ’
chelia might not look happy, but she did come along and sat down on the chair, offering up her arm for a quick examination. if she rolled her eyes, she was smart enough to do it as kora’s back was turned, but the older mage had a hard time imagining that the younger blendy was anywhere as prone to this particular gesture as her cousin.
as kora had suspected, the injury was not grave. it would bruise because that was what happened when one took a fall like this ( kora would know, it had happened to her more than once ), but chelia was in no immediate danger. content with the result, the transformation mage rummaged through her pockets before she handed over a small package of shortbread. ‘ ‘ carolina-sama baked yesterday and gave some to me, ’ ’ she explained with a smile as she pushed the door open to let chelia leave, ‘ ‘ and everyone knows i’m the resident tea drinker in this guild. well, along with jura-sama. ’ ’
with whom she was actually supposed to have tea later today, come to think of it. she could not help but shudder inwardly. he did not mean to be, she kept being assured by others, but he was intimidating.
‘ ‘ --- and if you can help it, ’ ’ she called after the departing girl, ‘ ‘ if you want to try this exercise again, have an older mage assist you! i’d be happy to and i think the same would go for your cousin, she explained it to me when i first joined! ’ ’
she was meddling in other people’s affairs and she knew it without adam glancing up from what he had been reading in the nearby alcove, but what good was all the knowledge kora absorbed by existing in the same guild as all those people if she did not occasionally put it to good use?
