The Congo biotope - definitely not accurate yet, as you’ll never see A. normani there, or duckweed, but it’s a WIP. Going to be adding some emersed grasses once they’ve passed QT, and if I can get hold of other species found in the Lefini river, that would be great. I do have a group of juvenile Aphyosemion pyrophore coming at some point, and if I can close all gaps on the tank then I’ll probably add them. They’re found near the Lefini, but I don’t know that they’re found IN the Lefini. Anyway.

2-3 week old fry of several hard water species: Glossolepis dorityii, Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi, Poropanchax luxophthalmus and Pseudomugil luminatus. Twice-daily feedings of microworms, liquid foods and crushed/powdered flakes and pellets.

Moved the fry to the Rainbow tank - quite a few of them are getting to the stage where they need the dilution of a larger volume of water. It also means that their tank is free for some new arrivals: Congopanchax brichardi (genus name seems to be constantly in flux - ought to double-check their current classification).

Gudgeon Fry Update

The babies are doing really well, at the mo - getting fat enough that you can make out their internal organs properly! They’re very curious: always approach the glass when I come by, and the longer I wait, the more appear. I reckon there are between 10 and 15, but the planting’s pretty heavy, so it’s difficult to be certain.

ALSO, I was doing a water change when one of them darted past at the surface. This is pretty unusual (they spend most of their time in the centre of the tank), and I was worried because the little one looked skinny compared to the others and was very skittish. But then I looked closer...and there was a bright blue flash over its eye. Lampeye fry! I’d no idea they’d spawned successfully, or that I’d gathered any fry/eggs when transferring the gudgeons, but there he is! Again, no idea how many there are - it may just be him, given how long it’s taken me to realise he was there. I’ll have to keep fattening them up!

The peacock gudgeons and lampeyes last night. Had to remove the sound, ‘cause WOW it was bad ;P
