obviously he was lying about not destroying konoha, but he does look genuinely shocked that she'd try to kill him, plus he seems regretful that she didn't take up his offer (though that might be more of an efficiency thing)

chapter 168

he expresses regret for hurting her—unlike jiraiya, who he insults right out of the gate, he seems to care about tsunade and appeals to her instead of directly continuing his attack

of course, we don't know how much he's trying to manipulate her, and I'm not trying to imply they're like. best buddies or anything. earlier in the arc he literally triggers her hemophobia for no reason. but I think it's interesting that he tries to bargain with her at first instead of trying to force her to heal him from the get-go, and that she agrees to meet him at all, despite knowing he's a missing-nin. (also that he has many, many child murders under his belt let's not forget the unethical experimentation. though she might not have known the specifics if she already left the village.)

if anything, what I get from their relationship is people on ideologically separate paths who were very close when they were younger, resulting in the last vestiges of care for the person they remember.

holy shit that tumblr post about emailing academics for their papers is right. in other words. i finally have a copy of this master's thesis that's otherwise only available in the university of macau's library.

One of the difficult things in cn -> eng translation (that I thankfully haven’t rly had to deal with) is imo the issue of interjections. Like, how the hell do you translate “妈呀”? Do you just localize to “oh my god”? I’ve seen ppl use “mamma mia” which keeps the mom theme, but nobody rly uses that term in english unless they’re caricaturing italians. Or what about “天啊”? That seemingly has a more direct mapping with 天 = heaven, but actually that’s not rly correct and should I be translating this as “heavens”, therefore implying that the concept of 天 is the same as captial h heaven? And anyway that’s also not a thing most people casually say anymore.
