Hey! I'm interested in this discourse about not learning languages. Do you happen to have any recommendations for scholarly books/ articles about it? Or key words I could use to find some research on it?
I’m not the best person to ask since I’m not a sociolinguist, but I don’t think there are v many articles on this topic in general ? but there are definitely papers about why specific cultures have remained closed to outsiders, so you could start, for example, by researching the social context of Australian languages or Native American languages &c. also read up on contemporary perspectives regarding Language Preservation vs Language Revitalisation
it may also be worth reading up on Indigenous and Minority Rights in general (give the UN Declarations a skip though, they’re a bit tedious to read tbh). Communities have the right to Self-Determination and to practice their culture and traditions (btw this is why we don’t force contact upon Uncontacted/Isolated Peoples) so this implies language rights too, even if it isn’t always explicitly mentioned in the paper
finally, I know blogs aren’t technically scholarly, but @injerabae is a scholar and has posted about this at length recently. have a scroll through their blog. @allthingslinguistic is also an academic and has in the past recommended the book Decolonizing Methodologies, by Linda Tuhiwai Smith
