17.08.17 | finishing up week 8 of the summer language challenge! honestly i did not have as much time as i would have liked to work on this over the summer but i’m going to persist anyway. this week i mostly studied grammar & conjugations, which still throw me off a little bc of the pronoun drop so i think it’s really important that i get the present tense ones down pat! as always please please please correct any mistakes i make in the paragraph below.
i assume you have a large collection of language books on your bookshelf
yeah… my friends made fun of me for how many I own
summer language challenge!
Hello! This is my intro post for @notglot‘s Summer Language Challenge! I am learning a language this summer anyway so might as well do it organizedly!
who i am
I’m Ella! I’m 19, Canadian, and I study mathematical physics!
my target language
I am self-studying Korean!
why i chose this language
I’d heard about how Korean grammar is very different from the languages I already speak and it really intrigued me before I even started studying it
Also I found the writing system very interesting, at first i was only going to learn the “alphabet” but then I found myself learning everything
my goal!
My goal is to finish Unit 1 of How to Study Korean (the website I am currently using to learn)
I’ve been learning a lot about the grammar but I am behind on its vocab lessons so my specific goal is also to know the vocabulary words in that unit!
(I have finished up to lesson 8, but do not know the vocab in those lessons off-hand)
I have also already started to write a (very short) paragraph everyday in Korean, so I will keep that up!
when my summer starts and ends
my summer has actually already started!
so from today, june 21, to august 31!
if anyone else is learning korean this summer, please message me so I can follow you to keep motivated! This is a sideblog so I’ll follow as @fideleus
#SummerLanguageChallenge
okay so I know I live in Australia and it’s the middle of winter and I still have to go to work etc but I saw @notglot‘s Summer Language Challenge post and I love the idea of it!
So here’s my intro post. I’m going to try and do approx 30min a day for this school term (I’m a casual teacher) so 23 July - 22 September and then I can chill and focus on my German because my exam is on the 27th of September.
As it’s not summer though, I’m going to tag this with ‘t3 norsk challenge’ as well as ‘summer language challenge’, ‘langblr’ and ‘mine’.
🦆🦆🦆
Who I am
Belinda, 25, from Australia. Maths teacher. Studying German 202 (approx B2 level) at uni at the moment.
My target language & why
Norwegian. No real reason, I just think it sounds cool and it’s very similar to German and English so should be easy-ish to pick up. And close to Swedish which I’d like to learn at some point eventually.
My goals
Be able to count, use simple phrases, introduce & talk about myself, my family, hobbies, daily routines etc.
Minimum: First 5 chapters of NotW and the first four checkpoints on Duo up to ‘Order’.
Materials
Duolingo and Norwegian on the Web
Updates
I’m going to be posting updates every week on Sunday. They’ll include what I’ve learnt and how much I got done etc. Might also include what I’ve been doing with German. I’m going to try and include a little bit of writing in Norwegian in these posts. If you’re a native speaker, please feel free to correct me! I’ll also probably be chatting about my experiences in the langblr discord group chat that I admin so join that if you want.
🦆🦆🦆
Let’s goooooo. Tag me if you want me to see your posts about Norwegian or German or if you’re doing the challenge too! I’m excited!
I know it’s already halfway through summer (yikes) but here are some post ideas (inspired by @notglot‘s challenge) for documenting and motivating your language learning!
1) These ideas are meant for someone just starting out in a language and probably can’t read/write very much, if at all.
2) There is no time requirement. Complete one every day, every week, every two weeks - it doesn’t matter! This is meant to be flexible so you can set your own time limits within your schedule.
3) Tag your posts with #avaguavaslc so I can see what you’re up to!
Have fun!
Post ideas:
Give an intro post of your goals/timeline
Describe your study plan and technique
Post a photo of you practicing the alphabet

27.07.17 | me? start a summer challenge and then abandon it two weeks later? haha who could imagine....
anyway i definitely have not forgotten about this or even stopped working on it, i’ve just been so busy with social stuff and helping around the house that i haven’t gotten a chance to write anything out to post! this week i have been working on food and on listening comprehension with podcasts. as always, i would love to hear any criticism or corrections!
