8/365. A little girl wanders through the Answ Cafard Slave Memorial. 20 towering stone effigies commemorate the lives of the slaves lost in a shipwreck off the southwest coast of Martinique. In 1835, almost 20 years after the importation of slaves was made illegal, a ship carrying slaves crashed into the rocky shores of Martinique claiming half the lives on board.
