La Parguera and the Bio Bay

We visited the Bioluminescent Bay in La Parguera on a recent Friday night and discovered a fishing village that has come alive again, post-COVID.  La Parguera, in southwestern in Puerto Rico, is best known for its proximity to one of Puerto Rico’s three bioluminescent bays, but it also offers mangrove forests to kayak through and nature reserves to explore. The tropical waters are rich with marine life, and you can take snorkeling and diving trips out of La Parguera.

The trip to the Bio Bay happens after dark and is impossible to capture in a video. But come visit the village at night with us! We’ll walk a boardwalk teeming with people, music, restaurants, bars, artisan’s kiosks, and more.

Our tour operator was Aleli Tours, a small operation run by a bilingual, U.S. Coast Guard-certified captain, marine biologist and ecologist with over 30 years of experience. Pix & a story! La Parguera - Lajas, PR is home to one of the island’s three Bioluminescent Bays. The Bio Bay in Vieques is the most protected (no motor-craft or unofficial, unaccompanied tours allowed and all by kayak, only) and therefore, the brightest. The bioluminescent creatures, called dinoflagellates, benefit by a pristine environment & flourish in the greatest concentration there. But the other two island spots (Farjardo & Lajas) have the advantage of being day trips, while Vieques requires an overnight stay. In Lajas, you can organize a Bio Bay tour that allows you to take the plunge! The cheaper tours take a large group of tourists who get to watch student divers plunge in and agitate the water to stimulate the bioluminescent effect. For $40 per person, a smaller boat will take less than 15 people who can literally swim in the water themselves— surrounded by the glittering light effects put forth by the tiny organisms. It’s surreal!!! You can swim and watch the light effects sparkle and stream around you, as your hands cut through the water. It’s a most magical experience. You don’t HAVE to get in the water to enjoy the effect, but someone from your party will need to, so everyone who stays aboard can also see. I don’t include pictures of the Bio Bay itself, because this is a phenomenon to experience with your eyes, not with a camera.
