BJJ Class
Another drop-in class at Bay Jiu-Jitsu with Tim. Warmed up with some partner guard passing drills, then got into the technique of the day, the Chilean Neck Tie:
Starting in top side control against an opponent who’s turning away from you, open up your right lapel and get a good grip on the bottom with your right hand.
Pass it under opp’s top arm and by their neck and pass it to your left hand.
Windshield wiper your legs to your right and step your right foot over opp’s body.
Sit back and pull opp onto you as you straighten out the left leg and get it in position to pull over opp’s head and plant it on the near side of their neck.
Straighten your left arm (holding your lapel) and pull as you push with your left leg to get the tap.
Then a bunch of live rolls. Had some decent success against a few blue belts today. Caught a few submissions and was working on an omoplata against one but couldn’t flatten him out properly - the trick is to go heavy on the legs to break down the arms and then scoot out to get the angle for submission. Also got to roll with a black belt who killed me nice and gently and then a purple where I tweaked my knee a bit. Great class and great school to visit!
BJJ Class
Tuesday morning early class with Jim. The car didn’t start, so I pedaled down to the school and got good and sweaty before class even started. After warming up, we got into a brabo choke from guard. This works better if the gi is already open:
With opponent in your closed guard, pull them forward using your legs and open up their gi with your right hand and bring it over their back and pass it to your left hand, which should be in front of their arm.
Slide your right arm up right next to opp’s neck and grab the lapel with your palm up, getting this as tight as possible.
Hip out to the right as you bring your left hand across opp’s body and grab onto the gi material by their left shoulder.
Bring your body back to center and lock in the choke just like a cross collar by bringing your elbows in.
We covered a few variations and also looked at how it could be applied from knee-on-belly, but this was the meat of it. Then we did some live rolling and I had good success against a similarly skilled white belt but then got smashed by two blue belts.
“he tapped…it’s over. I think he choked him out, I couldn’t tell. Oh! He did! Armlock…he probably broke his arm.”
