Two-Legs; Monday 14th January 2019 will be etched in our hearts as the day we said Goodbye to Mr Benson.
We realized quite early on, that he was a lot older than what we’d been led to believe. And so, we reckon he was around 10 years old when he came to live with us.
In the last year, his 14th, he started to show his age. He was diagnosed with a neurological disorder of the spine, which caused him difficulty in walking and standing. It also caused his front legs to spasm, so they ended up being splayed out to either side of his body.
Yet, for the most part, he was a happy dog. He loved going out in his stroller, he loved his treats and he loved just being at home, warm and with a fully belly!
And then the time came. He had a look in his eyes that told us that he had had enough.
The look said...Let me go.
With all his family around, we took his last walk, it seemed so odd that we should be walking and talking when we knew what was going to happen later in the afternoon. He had his favorite meal and a sedative so he would be relaxed and sleepy.
That afternoon, Dr Nil Wilkins from the company Lap of Love came. It was all so peaceful and respectful for Benson, even Harvey and Chloe became quiet and subdued. And after each one of us had said our private goodbyes to Benson, he slipped away.
We are all so grateful to Benson. He taught all of us so much. His tolerance, his patience and his acceptance of all his troubles. We know he had a life before us, and his life could have ended pretty soon after that, but he got a second chance when he came to live with our family.
Thank you Benson for spending the last part of your life with us, we enjoyed every minute.
We will always love you Angel.
And now I think it is only right that Benson should have the last word.
Benson; If you are lucky enough to get a second chance, don’t waste it. I’m glad I got to grow old because I was adopted. I had so many nice trips and met a lot of amazing people and dogs. And just being somewhere to call my home with my family, especially Harvey became my whole world, and of that I shall be eternally grateful.
Be Good, Be Kind, Be Grateful and Love unconditionally.
And above all else, always remember the power of a good belly rub!
Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.
