COP UNION FEARS GARCETTI'S OBAMA-LIKE CHARM
(JULY 19, 2014) The union representing Los Angeles police officers will file a complaint with the city’s employee relations board. It’s an effort to stop Mayor Eric Garcetti from using his charm to win over cops.
Upping the ante: #LA police union to file complaint to stop @ericgarcetti from talking to officers at roll call about labor contract @KPCC

Last week, police officers rejected Garcetti’s new contract offer. Police Protective League (LAPPL) union president Tyler Izen called it “a slap in the face” because the vast majority of the 9,900 cops represented would not get raises.
Big labor knows if the police get raises, every other public employee union will demand them too. So it’s important for the LAPPL to keep Mayor Garcetti from schmoozing with police officers. Everyone in town knows Eric can sell ice to Eskimos.
Post-Periodical, Western San Fernando Valley News:
“The LAPPL is not at impasse, and such direct communications are prohibited by the city’s employee relations ordinance and the state government code,” union president Izen said. “The law is very clear. City officials are prohibited from communicating with employees concerning subjects of ongoing collective bargaining negotiations.”
Garcetti’s Obama-like charm could be enough to sway some union members that are so used to having their strings pulled.
Mayor Garcetti used Republican Kevin James to create the perception he was anti-union during his 2013 mayoral campaign).
That facade worked because almost every public sector union backed Wendy Greuel.
The hated Department of Water and Power (DWP) donated $4 million to elect Greuel, but ended up inking a deal with Garcetti that froze salaries for three years, effectively eating crow.
Now it’s the police officers’ time to shine. Their union chipped in $1.5 million to defeat Garcetti, plus some pocket change for this piece of crap video ad.
Maybe if the union had invested its member’s dues more wisely, they wouldn’t be perceived as public sector parasites.
Instead, LAPPL (like the DWP) makes Mayor Garcetti look like Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. At least for a couple of news cycles.
