Euterpe and Clio

Description

Euterpe and Clio are two of the nine Greek Muses, goddesses who embodied arts and sciences. Clio is the Muse of History, typically depicted with scrolls or tablets, while Euterpe is the Muse of Music and Lyric Poetry, usually shown with a flute. They often appear together in art, symbolizing the harmony of history and music.

The Last Judgment

Description

The Romanist Floris was one of the most widely admired and highly paid painters of his time. In his search for new possibilities, the artist sought to give his Last Judgment a psychological dimension by using “close-ups” of the damned to underline the horror of the scene. On the stone base is a Latin inscription (from the Sixth Book of Solomon): “Then those who do justice will be justly judged, and those who are judged shall know themselves accountable.”

The Invalides Hotel Foundation

Description

The Hôtel des Invalides was commissioned and financed by Louis XIV in 1670, in order to provide hospital accommodation and care for wounded, sick, disabled and elderly soldiers. The chosen site was located near Paris, in the plain of Grenelle, on the banks of the Seine.

Since its founding in 1670, the original medical and military roles of the Invalides, which Louis XIV considered his most important work, have been enriched through the years by several new ones. Today it has become a truly living and welcoming site.

Venus Brings Healing Herbs to the Wounded Aeneas

Description

In Virgil's Aeneid (Book XII), the goddess Venus heals her son, the Trojan hero Aeneas, after he is wounded by an arrow in battle. She secretly brings Cretan dittany (Dictamnus), a medicinal herb, and adds it to the healer Iapyx’s water to instantly cure the wound and restore his strength, allowing him to return to battle.
