LARP drop is just that you put down all your anxiety and misery and fear and nervousness for a little bit and pretend to be a different weirdo and have a great time with friends you only see through a prism (I have a good idea of who you are if I've seen you play three separate characters you designed yourself) and then you finish telling a story together, and you go home, and like

There's all your neuroses

Sitting in the dark, waiting for you to turn on the light

Going well well well look who's come crawling back

Larp drop, plus exhaustion from a cold that spread through my office, plus shark week, on top of my regular feelings of isolation, has made for a rich feeding ground for the brain weasels. I'm not spiraling as bad as I used to, but it still hurts and takes a lot of energy trying to stomp the weasels out.

And to go more in depth here than on Facebook... larp time vs my reality is a stark contrast. At a larp (and especially at Hawkins where I had the best in game romance I've gotten to play so far) there's such a strong sense of community. And it's affectionate. At home I'm stuck in my room and all my people live on the other side of a screen. I am so lonely in my day to day life, but work and my health have me drained to the point where getting out and doing things in person is such a huge challenge.

And here's the larp drop. I keep having to remind myself that the story I told had impact on me, and that's all that was required. We were all our own main characters, and just because my interactions aren't getting mentioned in shout out posts doesn't mean that I didn't help create a beautiful story. It doesn't mean that I'm a shit role player and scene partner, despite what the drop brain is telling me.

Why Decompression Is Important

Went back to the wondrous wastelands of Dystopia Rising this weekend, and actually died with Infection loss for the first time. I cried for an hour or more in-game as they tore at our emotions, then spent the next few hours pretending to roleplay "Avoidant Personality Disorder," which is the opposite of my typical character's personality. The next day after game, I laid in bed all day. These reasons are why decompression is important and how LARP drop is a real thing I can now say I have experienced, unfortunately. It's not fun, nor should it be made fun of. But I got through it and let me tell ya- friends are the best remedy for the LARP drop/bleed issues. If you're ever feeling it and you see this- hit me up.
