Recommendation Corner: Hiking Las Cabras
A lot of my expat buddies complain that while San Miguel is beautiful for walks through the often steep cobblestone streets surrounded by mountains; that they wish they could take hikes in nature outside our sweet city. While Mexico isn’t known for well-marked trails, there are gorgeous nooks to hike and climb all over this geographically diverse country, and of course that includes the San Miguel area, in the highlands of Central Mexico.
If you’re looking for a short, moderate hike with a great final view, I recommend Las Cabras. The path winds up the mountain with switchbacks giving you a view of the presa and, at the right time of day, the sunset over the water and mountains. Then you meet this friendly cactus on your way back down …
To get to Las Cabras, take the highway towards Celaya/Guanajuato leaving San Miguel de Allende. Turn left after the 5th pedestrian bridge. Take the narrow, stone road till you reach a fork. The trails goes up and to the right.
