My favorite insect noise is just that one cicada call they constantly use as “alien noises” in horror movies.

But the most INTERESTING noise is the one produced by male water boatmen

For their size, it’s the loudest sound produced by an insect via stridulation, that is, sound produced by rubbing one body part against another.

In this case, the stridulation comes from the male repeatedly stroking his penis against his own washboard-like underbelly.

Unfortunately there’s no actual video footage or photos of this happening that I can find
