On February 3rd, 1959, Chicano singer and guitarist Richard Steven Valenzuela (better know as Ritchie Valens) passed away in a tragic plane crash along with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper at just 17 years old. Valens became an overnight success in the summer of 1958 and became even more popular with hits like La Bamba and Donna. Ritchie Valens was an inspiration to Latin American artists across the United States and played a key role in popularizing Latin infused rock and roll.
