Vancouver, Day 10: I Emerge From the Cave
Y’all should be so proud of me today. I actually went outside. I stayed outside for hours. I did a food truck walking tour! The way it worked is that the tour went to specific food trucks where we were provided samples of whatever the truckers wanted us to try. It was advertised as a full meal’s equivalent of food, but to honest it was more like two meals’ worth.
We started at Japadog, with their best-selling Kurobuta Terimayo dog. Kurobuta is apparently a really tasty sausage made with specially curated meat, and there was a housemade teriyaki mayo on it that was SO GOOD. The sausage had a great snap on it too. Oh, and there was seaweed!
We then hiked over to Robson by the art gallery (which, btw, I’ve seen abbreviated as V.A.G., which as a lesbian I find hilarious). That entire street corner is covered with food trucks, and to my delight, the next stop was the grilled cheese truck.
Some background on this fucker-- the last time I was in Vancouver, I went to the art gallery, got hungry, and resorted to the gallery’s cafe. Which was not bad, but immediately after I finished I walked down the steps to the sea of food trucks and walked smacked into Mom’s Grilled Cheese Truck. Which I was no longer hungry enough to try. Curses!!
This one was pretty basic-- cheddar and bacon on sourdough. But for something basic, it was pretty feckin’ good. Came with some housemade ginger mint lemonade and some locally sourced kettlechips. And right next door was a taco truck!
This is a fish taco from Tacofino. The innards was fried cod, I think, and it came with a tasty slaw and a spicy drizzle of some kind. I’m not a huge salsa fan (tomatoes can jump off a cliff as far as I’m concerned) but it pretty much tumbled off anyway so it didn’t take away from my enjoyment. The best part? It came with cookies!
This is the chocolate diablo cookie, two bites in because I forgot to take picture prior to digging in. I do not fuck around with desserts. In case you haven’t noticed. But I do fuck with this cookie. It was a rich dark chocolate, perfectly chewy, and just a little spicy. Sprinkled with sugar and salt.
The last stop of our tour was my favorite. Meet the Fat Duck Food Truck, located near Canada Place. It’s the only food truck in the entire city of Vancouver that serves duck. And oh my word.
It’s hard to see, but we got to try their best-selling dirty rice bowl. Now, as rule dirty rice is better than regular rice in every sense of the word. But this dirty rice comes with pork belly AND duck confit. I love me some duck confit. I’m going back for a full serving before I leave Vancouver.
Overall, the food tour was great. The group happened to be small, which made it feel more intimate. The tour guide was knowledgeable about both food trucks and restaurants, and the city in general. She had lots of stories about stumbling onto film sets (including Supergirl), and all the while I’m just like “Why won’t it happen to meeee?” I was also the only single person in the group (ha-hey!) so she took pity on me and chatted a lot about the different areas of the city.
Pro tip: If you do any kind of walking tour, TIP THE TOUR GUIDE. I was so smart, I went and got cash ahead of time-- and forgot to give it to her. I’m a fucking asshole. Don’t be an asshole.
Since we finished at Canada Place, I went and knocked out Flyover Canada while I was there. It was pretty cool! I was a little disappointed it wasn’t narrated, because I wasn’t ever sure exactly what I was looking at in any given moment, but ooh! pretty pictures! I would warn any one who’s sensitive to smells though. They try to do an olfactory tour where they spray scents at you, and it gave me a bit of a headache.
Coming out of Flyover Canada, I stopped by Mink, a gourmet chocolate cafe. Say no more, right? They have gourmet chocolate bars, as well as bon bons and a full cafe menu. I was hoping a place to sit down a write for a few hours, so I went for the drinking chocolate.
It was like drinking melted chocolate and I was in heaven. It also meant I had no room for dinner, which was a bit of a bummer, but I think I needed a break anyway. On a separate note, I’m running out of pages in my notebook. Anyone know where a girl can get journal refills in Vancouver? Inquiring writers need to know.
The Doggy Bag (2)
As doggy bags became more widespread and diners were emboldened to ask if they could take home the remains of their meal, it did begin to raise some awkward social questions, not least whether it was right to request a doggy bag if you did not own a dog. Queries along these lines regularly appeared in newspaper etiquette columns, one reader recounting in 1964 how her husband had “looked aghast”…

Home cooks who want to give soup a little extra flavour can add seasoning, or perhaps a pinch of herbs.
Potage de pierres, not recommended if you’re trying to lose weight. Heston, eh? What’s he like?
