Although Latinos made up a whopping 23% of movie ticket sales in 2017, predominantly Latino neighborhoods tend to lack movie theaters. Lights, camera, action: Enter Moctesuma Esparza. Famous for producing “Selena” and being a leader of the 1986 East LA Walkouts, he is trying to change this underrepresentation through his ownership of Maya Cinemas. Operating since 2003 in underserved Latino neighborhoods in California, Maya is in the process of expanding into Nevada, Texas and Arizona. He also has a program aimed at airing independent Latino films that haven’t been able to secure theatrical distribution with other chains… someone pass the popcorn.
