I think a gymnastics upset that isn’t talked about enough is Laura Jurca placing 8th AA at the 2015 world championships. She only qualified into the final with a 55.332 (21st place) and barely made the final despite hitting 4/4 in qualifications. She had been struggling with consistency all year on pretty much every event, and hadn’t been placing very well even at small friendly meets.
In the AA final she somehow improved on her qualifications score by 1.4 points, got her highest international or domestic AA score ever (56.732) by almost a whole point and beat some well established gymnasts such as Seda Tutkhalian, Asuka Teramoto, Wang Yan, Carlotta Ferlito, Flavia Saraiva, Elizabeth Seitz, she was 0.026 away from beating Ellie Black (56.758) and really only 6 tenths away from a 5th place at freaking worlds. Talk about getting your life together when it counts!
