In this final year of covid 5th year eligibility, reflecting on the policy’s effects and impacts, looking at examples from across the top teams in the ncaa, it seems clear to me that it primarily just made programs build around core stars who got to stick around for an extra year. To the detriment of developing underclassmen to fill those stars’ shoes. It really interrupted the flow of some teams and how they tended to set the future up for themselves imho.

so gymc*stic has apparently decided already that 1) usag's evidence is absolutely unquestionably conclusive (despite, i believe, not actually seeing the video? could be wrong about that but they don't mention seeing it), 2) that 24 hours' notice was insane and unfair for this hearing (even though the ad-hoc hearings are literally designed to be exactly that fast), and 3) that no one actually cares about the 1 minute time limit (???).

I’ve always been pretty neutral when it comes to rooting for American gymnasts because they’re mostly, um, meh to watch but the American exceptionalism on display this week and the absurd misinformation even gym fans who’ve followed this sport for over a decade were willing to believe just to continue to pretend USA is held to a different standard/was somehow victimized here has really put the nail in the coffin for me lol

Obviously this sucks for Jordan but the fact of the matter is that the judges fucked up in her favor 3 times on the day of competition. Crediting the gogean during the inquiry, allowing the inquiry overtime, and giving Sabrina an OOB that never happened.

She got to go up on the podium and have a medal ceremony for a medal she didn’t earn. Ana may get a medal eventually, but she’ll never have that moment of having her flag raised as she stands next to Simone and Rebeca, and Sabrina will get neither. Jordan will go back to a well funded college program and a well funded elite program with tons of potential for endorsements. She’s still got her Olympic gold and silver.

I feel really bad for all of them, this is awful for all three of them, but it’s odd to me that all of the sympathy goes to Jordan and none to the Romanians.
