2020 is the 300th anniversary of the completion of J.S. Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Violin and Suites for Cello (BWV 1001-1012). And in my biased opinion, the viola is the perfect one instrument to perform all of these works!
Violist Scott Slapin performed all of Bach’s Violin Solos and Cello Suites on the viola in a bar. Great read!
Laurie Niles from Violinist.com offers a free play-along to the first movement of Bach’s Double Violin Concerto in D Minor, revered by violinists across the music world.
In an effort to promote the coverage of live violin performance, Violinist.com each week presents links to reviews of notable concerts and recitals around the world.
A great list of this weeks’ violin concerts and recitals.
I am particularly interested in the review of Alina Ibragimova performing Mendelssohn’s beautiful Violin Concerto in E Minor.
Ibragimova is a violinist whose interpretations of Bach really opened my eyes to the possibility of powerful expression without relying solely on vibrato.
"Tasteful and moderate in her vibrato, allowing herself few Romantic rubato indulgences, Ibragimova delivers not just a more classical Mendelssohn than many, but even one that reminds you of the composer’s role in resurrecting Bach himself."

Also listed are Pekka Kuusisto, Augustin Hadelich (whose performance of Ysaye’s Ballade from Sonata No. 3 is hauntingly brilliant), and the great Itzhak Perlman.
