Hi! I'm the MRI anon, turns out, I really can't see a thing without glasses because I meant Akira meeting Mei and never realized about the spell checker checking that, it only works to create the most obnoxious phrases out of my things but never when I need it, I'm so sorry it felt that silly that day. So, huh, how would that meeting go?
MEI MY GUYYYYYYYYY lol dont worry about the typo, I typo ALL the time
Also oh god anon this question unlocked something in me. I have a whole essay on this. I'm so sorry you're about to get bricked in the face with my extensive bucket of onions.
Uhhh disclaimer that I have 100% lost the ability to interpret Narumiya Mei by any reasonable standard. Narumiya Mei is, in my head, defined by how I wrote him in Disappearance. The Disappearance of Narumiya Mei is required reading before if you want to understand half of this spiel. He is nowhere in the vicinity of the standard Mei characterization so if you haven't read that you may be lost.
1a) On the field, as opponents
Akira would find Mei super terrifying as a pitcher. He would never land a hit. Mayybe a grounder that immediately gets him out. Akira's too weak of a batter and Mei too strong of a pitcher for that to ever be a reasonable matchup. 3rd year Akira would fare better, but at that point Mei would have graduated already, RIP.
Mei going up against the twin battery--nothing but pure, competitive rage. He already wants to crush Eijun for daring to be a lefty in his district. Even worse, Eijun and Akira have this hilarious habit of being super insular when they play as a battery. They would not be intimidated by Mei at all, and barely pay him any attention, which of course pisses him off even more.
Mei vs the Furuaki battery--less rage inducing for Mei, thankfully. A more typical baseball interaction.
Akira would attempt to use his psychic dinner powers on Mei, who (sorry, this comes from the required reading) is so startled to come across another psychic in the wild that he strikes out. He then tries to subtly interrogate Akira about this (and also tries to find him after the game) but Akira is too stupid to know what he's talking about and also does not believe in psychics.
1b) On the field, as a battery:
A Mei-Akira battery actually wouldn't be that bad... Mei's standards are really, really high, which Akira would find intimidating (in his head, at least). I do think Akira's game calling aggressive enough to satisfy Mei's taste but he would not escape the lectures in between innings. This does not help the post-game anxiety. But he'd learn a lot, though!
On Mei's side, he'd be really tough on Akira, but he's also a good teammate. Akira is not on his shortlist of best catchers, but he respects the fact that Akira isn't a coward and makes his calls with confidence (even if they are sometimes the incorrect call). He does not know that Akira finds him terrifying.
2) Aroace on Aroace Violence
Mei hates Akira on sight for reasons he is unable to articulate. He knows it's dumb and irrational, and on paper he actually thinks the way Akira bullies Miyuki is funny and in theory he would want to be friends. Aroace catcher with a stupid sense of humor and probably has psychic powers? Like, they should get along, right?
The reasons are simply that Akira is too comfortable in his own skin and it bothers Mei. Akira's like "haha yeah I'm aroace :) anyway let's talk about snails" and Mei is like "if anyone even THINKS of romance in my vicinity I will OBLITERATE THEIR EXISTENCE and FUCK your stupid snails." Mei has too many complicated issues that he has never even glanced at, and Akira has been dragged and forced into regular and healthy communication since the day he left the womb. It's like when you have deep and unfathomable opinions on Batman and you see people in the wild having a perfectly great time playing with your dolls incorrectly. Instant rage, and if you act on it you're being an asshole.
Akira would find Mei annoying, but mostly because Miyuki becomes 10x more of an asshole when he and Mei hang out. Miyumei friendship is a hazard to everyone around them.
They'd probably be okay in group settings (let's temporarily team up to make fun of Miyuki Kazuya and crack jokes at the allos' expense!) but they would not choose to hang out on their own.
3) as psychics (I'M SO SORRY)
Akira's so weak as a psychic he doesn't actually believe in psychic powers. He thinks his dinner guesses are just lucky intuition. He thinks Mei is crazy. For the record, it is actually psychic powers and it is literally the only thing he can do. He probably would have been able to remember Mei in Disappearance but it wouldn't have helped because they don't interact, like, ever.
Mei does try to convince Akira of the existence of psychic powers but makes less than zero headway. He does not recognize the schadenfreude of this.
This is a metaphor for the way that Mei is hyperaware of the negative affects of amatonormativity on his existence, while Akira is so unsubscribed that being aroace is barely a drop in the bucket in his personal sense of self.
Exploratory monologue from The Disappearance of Narumiya Mei. One of the first scenes I wrote, when trying to get a feel for the fic. It was dropped for several reasons (did not fit tonally or narratively, too much talking, too derivative, by the time I figured out ch1 the story was no longer a comedy, etc etc)
But basically this is just the lesser prose form of the song Sugar In My Coffee by The Narcissist Cookbook, which is my theme song as both an aroace person and a certified coffee hater.
____
“I hate coffee,” Mei blurts out.
Itsuki shoots him a strange expression. “You literally don't?” he points out. "You love coffee; it's kind of your thing."
“No, I mean—” Mei waves his arms around, trying to get his point across. “You know when you're a kid, and you see what your parents are drinking? So your sister asks if she can have a sip, and your mom's like, ‘no coffee until you're older!’ And you're a good kid, so you just forget about it because it's not your problem, and coffee smells like shit anyway so it's not like you're missing out.
“But everyone’s so obsessed with coffee. There’s a coffee shop on every corner. People crack jokes about not being able to function without it. And one day, your friends are like, 'let's go check out that new café!’ and you completely missed the memo about being old enough for coffee, but whatever. You try some coffee and then spit it out because it fucking sucks, and you're like, ‘I’ll just stick with hot chocolate.’
“And your friends say, ‘oh, it’s because you got a black coffee, try my latte’ and it’s still bad. And the barista’s like, ‘here’s a mocha, it's basically a hot chocolate’ but you can still taste the coffee. And someone hands you a coffee cake, and even though it's in a completely different form you still can't stand it. So maybe coffee just isn't for you.
“But for some reason, going to the café is the thing now. Let's grab a coffee together! Let’s meet up at the coffee shop on the corner! I got you a Starbucks gift card for your birthday! Oh, you don’t like coffee? Sorry, I just assumed!
“And then you go home, and your dad--out of fucking nowhere, mind you--is like, ‘have you had any good coffee, lately?’ And you're like, ‘no, it tastes bad.’ But he just laughs at you. He says, ‘You’re still young. You'll learn to like it when you go to college and need to pull all-nighters for class.’
“And you think, ‘wow, that’s crazy. Maybe we shouldn’t create an environment where people feel pressured to stay up all night studying.’ But for some reason, people are like, ‘no, this is how it’s always been, and if you aren’t chugging six cups of coffee a day to deal with the stress, then you’re not studying hard enough—”
“Just to be clear,” Itsuki interrupts, “the coffee is a metaphor, right?”
hi there! i recently got back into Daiya and i just finished re-reading AA batteries (i've read it before, like, twice), and i just wanted you to know that i spent almost all of it cracking up, i absolutely love how you write, the sense of humor is right up my alley and akira's deadpan delivery kills me. i know AAB is pretty old by now, but it's an amazing fic, thank you for writing it!
AAB AKIRA MY SON AHHH
oh gosh it HAS been a few years, huh? I miss Akira, he was so much fun to write. Thank you for your kind words!!
Here: I have this fic I'm never going to finish, but the concept of it is just SO funny that I need people to know.
---
Eijun is halfway up climbing the ladder to the top bunk when somebody kicks in the door to his room. Startled, he lets go of the rungs and falls to the floor in an ungraceful tumble.
“Aki,” he groans. “Can’t you ever knock—”
“Ei!” Akira yells, halfway to insanity. “Ei, I fucked up!”
Eijun panics and shoves himself up onto his elbows. “Are you okay?” he demands.
“No!” Akira says, still yelling. He hides his face in his hands, and his shoulders are shaking.
Eijun scrambles to his feet and grabs his baseball bat. Asada, already in the bottom bunk and already in his pajamas, yelps as Eijun swings it overhead and holds it out like a sword.
“I don’t know what to do!” Akira’s voice shakes.
“What happened,” Eijun says, voice low.
(It is not a question.)
“I fucked up, Ei,” Akira cries out. “I fucked up so bad.”
“That’s okay; we all make mistakes,” Eijun says, attempting to comfort his distraught brother. “What happened? It’s probably not as bad as you think it is.”
Akira finally looks Eijun in the eye.
“I accidentally catfished Amahisa Kousei."
Two months ago.
“Why are you wearing the windbreaker?” Haruichi despairs, as he and Akira walk side-by-side through the tunnels of Meiji Jingu.“I’m sweating just looking at you.”
“It’s still spring,” Akira insists.
“It’s hot,” Haruichi counters. “Seriously, why are you wearing that?”
“Don’t ask questions you know the answer to,” Akira says, stubbornly rolling up the sleeves of his jacket. Haruichi’s right—it is entirely unnecessary.
But Akira’s been growing lately, and he wants to get as much use out of his windbreaker while the sleeves are still of a reasonable length. They don’t get new ones until the fall uniform assignments. Which means that he’ll have to go all summer with a too-small windbreaker in his closet, leaving him with his other, cheaper, jacket that is not the high-quality sporty material of the Seidou windbreakers. When the elitist craphole gives you a fancy jacket, you wear it.
He’s going to wear this thing until the seams burst. He’s going to wear this thing into the ground.
“It’s not that cool,” Haruichi says. He looks at Akira through tired, exhausted eyes. “It is literally not that cool.”
“Is that a weather joke?”
“If that’s what it takes to get you to take that thing off."
Up ahead, their teammates take a turn and start climbing the stairs. Akira and Haruichi pick up their speed so they can catch up.
“You’re fighting a losing battle, Haruichi,” Akira informs him, as he places his foot on the first step. “I am a Sawamura. We are made for the sunshine.”
“I thought you liked the rain?”
“I am a complex human being, with many internal contradictions—”
“Hey! Sawamura!”
Akira pauses on the stairs. Next to him, Haruichi also comes to a pause, and they both look around in confusion until they see Ichidaisan’s ace pitcher running in their direction.
The older player comes to a stop right in front of him, and just a step below, so that Akira is looking down at his shaved head. Amahisa—that was his name—is breathing hard, and his face is flushed. When Akira looks up, he can see the rest of Ichidaisan’s team some distance away.
“Why are you talking to me?” Akira asks, genuinely baffled.
Amahisa’s easygoing grin falters. But only for a second.
“Hi,” Amahisa says. “I just wanted to say—good game!”
Akira frowns.
“Also,” Amahisa continues, “about that last pitch—”
“Nope,” Akira says, cutting him off and turning around. “I will not be sharing information on the team. Good-bye.”
“Wait!”
Amahisa reaches out and grabs Akira’s wrist. Akira yanks his arm back and glares at the pitcher.
“Sorry,” Amahisa says, holding his hands up in surrender. “Just, uh—”
“If it’s about pitching or strategy, you’re not getting anything out of me,” Akira says, face blank.
“What he means to say is that he’s aroace,” Haruichi interrupts, elbowing Akira in the side as he does so. “So if you’re shooting your shot, then the answer is no. Sorry, Amahisa-san.”
Haruichi, I would die for you, Akira thinks, still trying to recover his equilibrium.
“Oh,” Amahisa says. There’s a split-second of disappointment on his face before it quickly gets wiped away. “Well, that’s cool! I’m okay with making friends, too!”
“Friends,” Akira repeats, trying to reboot his brain from its panic-induced shutdown.
“Yeah, y’know. Friends? I’m sure you have a ton.”
“Do you always try to befriend the losing team?” Akira asks.
Amahisa smiles. “Just the interesting ones.”
“Uh, thanks?”
They stare at each other for an awkward moment.
“Anyway, can I have your contact info?”
The next thirty seconds are a blur, and then, as quickly as Amahisa came, he vanishes back into the crowd. Akira looks at his phone, which now has Amahisa’s contact information in it. He stares at the numbers, uncomprehendingly.
“What just happened?” he asks.
“Hell if I know,” Haruichi answers, and they jog up the stairs in an attempt to catch up with the rest of their team.
“Hey, guys!” Amahisa says, when he rejoins his teammates on the bus. “I got Sawamura Eijun’s number! He’s aroace, though. Not that that’s uncool or anything! He’s an ace ace, I respect that! But I didn’t see that coming. He always seemed really flirty with his catcher, so I thought MLM solidarity but I guess—”
“Shut up,” yells his captain, and they start the bus ride back to their school.
Amahisa Kousei is a really good pitcher.
He can throw at speeds comparable to Furuya’s pitches, and his breaking balls are as sharp as Eijun’s. He’s a good pitcher, and he knows it, which is annoying from an opponent’s perspective and comforting from a catcher’s. Akira still has no clue why Amahisa sought out the catcher that spent the entire match in Seidou’s bullpen, but, well. Who knows what goes on in the minds of other people.
“It’d be weird if I asked if I could catch for him, right?” Akira asks Furuya. He has Amahisa’s contact pulled up, and he squints at their empty chat.
“I think it’d be weird,” Furuya decides, after a short pause. “He’d probably see it as a threat. You’d get too much insight into his pitching if you catch for him. That’s espionage.”
“You’re right.” Akira sighs and deletes his message draft. “I guess I’ll have to wait until he graduates.”
Furuya nods seriously.
“Am I supposed to message first?” Akira wonders aloud. “How do people make friends with people they don’t already know?”
“Don’t look at me,” Furuya says. “We should ask Eijun.”
“I can’t,” Akira yelps. “He’ll be like, ‘you don’t have to be scared, Aki! Just be yourself!’ and then he’ll sound like a shonen protagonist for a few days and we’ll all have to put up with him rambling about the power of friendship.”
“Your brother is a shonen protagonist.”
“If anyone on this team is a shonen protagonist, it’s Toujou,” Akira says. “Toujou’s cool. Eijun’s like, an obnoxious side character.”
“But he knows how to socialize with people, unlike us.”
“I guess,” Akira says. “He’s really bad at replying to texts, though. Maybe we can ask Kanemaru—“
Bzzt.
Akira nearly drops his phone, but he manages to catch it before it hits the ground. He angles the screen so that both he and Furuya can read the message.
hey
“I hate this,” Akira hisses. “What the hell does that mean?”
“Hey. A standard greeting,” Furuya says, like he’s reciting a definition for a vocabulary word. “Often used as a precursor to small talk.”
“Small talk?” Akira moans. “When do we get to the stage where we communicate entirely through memes?”
Furuya pulls out his own phone and starts back-scrolling through their messages.
“The first meme I sent you was four days after we decided to be friends,” Furuya announces.
“Four days,” Akira repeats. “Okay! Yeah, that’s doable. Now I just have to figure out how to respond—“
He gets cut off by a sudden influx of notifications.
hey
heyyyyyyyyyyy
sawamuraaaaaa
“Shit,” Akira says, and he starts typing.
Furuya cheers him on.
hello amahisa-san
oooh so formal!
haha wow I wasn’t expecting that from you
“Oh, fuck,” Akira says. “Should I have said ‘hi’ instead?”
“Send a meme?”
Hahahaha!!!!!
“He doesn’t get it,” Akira says, hiding his face in his hands.
“Maybe he’ll get it four days from now,” Furuya says, optimistic as ever.
