Traveller has a non traditional character system in that there are no levels at all. Everything is based on skills that you acquire as you age. So, realistically, am older character will be more experienced than a younger character. Though after a certain age you may start to lose stats, and younger characters learn new skills quicker. It's a sci-fi rpg, but it encompasses everything from the stone age to the distant future.
