A Post-Oathbound Theory about Bree’s Abilities
The Shadow King tells Bree that she’ll be “forever altered” because her soul developed scar tissue so the restored piece will never quite ‘fit.’
My theory is that this is the very thing that may enable her to continue being a medium without experiencing possession.
Long explanation: Cutting off her ability to access the ancestral plane and therefore cutting off her ancestors resulted in the soul fracture and the subsequent root seepage. The Shadow King cut off the loose piece and Bree’s soul scarred over. Now, with her soul piece back if (or WHEN) she reopens the ancestral stream her ancestors will be dealing with an internal landscape that has changed since the last time. Bree, who is described by Erebus as “wearing her heart on her sleeve,” has now learned ruthlessness and the ability to choose herself.
This ruthlessness and boundary-setting while still being compassionate and heroic are exemplified in how her soul developed scar tissue and she just “kept going” even while incomplete. Being able to resist possession, specifically Arthur’s, I feel is one of the biggest tests Bree is yet to pass - all the way in Legendborn already Mariah was advising her to learn to keep that door closed tight.
She now has the capacity to learn how to quiet the intrusion of her ancestors at will while still accessing the power she has inherited.
