You remember it awfully well, the first day you ever met her, you were 18, she was 21.
You are standing awkwardly in the doorway, clutching your purse with sweaty hands. Then she appeared at the top of the stairs, making her way down wearing baggy jeans, a black crop-top that had no sleeves, and a short shaggy haircut that grew out just below her shoulders.
She walked with lazy confidence, whilst licking an ice lolly despite it being mid-winter time. “Oh,” she laughed quietly, looking down on you, your head to your toes. “So you’re the friend…” You flash an awkward, reserved smile, “Uhh- yeah…”
“You’re cute.” It wasn’t a huge moment to anyone else. It didn't matter. To Nayeon, it was just another day, getting ready for school. To you…? Well.
You’d spent the rest of that week telling yourself the only reason you felt a burn in your cheeks was due to the amount of heat they had trying to warm themselves up.
A few years passed, you were now 20, and she was 24.
Your best friend remained your best friend, and sleepovers became much more regular, and their house felt as familiar and as safe as your own. You learned where the snacks were kept, the books, and where they stashed their toilet paper. You even picked up on a few habits her parents had.
And most of all, you learned how to avoid Nayeon, which seemed inevitable at first, but as you grew close to the family, you figured out most of her schedule. Keyword: most. When she did happen to be at home, it wasn’t all so pleasant.
“Hey, Y/n. Come help convince your best friend to stop nerding and chill and watch a movie!” She’d shout through doors.
“Can you taste this? I believe I put way too much sugar in this. I need a second opinion.” She’d hold out a spoon that was filled with your favourite flavour of cake. “Say ahh~!” She guided the spoon closer to your mouth, “Huh? I can eat it myself, you know?” You go to reach the handle of the spoon, “come on, it’s fine, really.” Nayeon insisted, causing you to feel a bit awkward but opening your mouth anyway.
Every one of these stupid interactions left you smiling and giggling like an idiot. Which was a big problem. Because somewhere along the line of 18 to 20, your small, tiny, childish crush turned into the biggest crush of your life.
A crush on your best friend’s elder sister.
The biggest movie, K-drama, book, or cliche ever. Which also happened to be the biggest disaster ever, and was absolutely the last person you should be falling for.
You were sitting in the living room, watching Despicable Me after hours of convincing your best friend, as it was your favourite. You laughed at the funny parts, and sat through silence through the rest, until she came.
“…You’re staring again.” You nearly dropped your drink. “At the movie? Yeah…” Playing it off as well as you possibly could, your best friend raised an eyebrow at your stupidity.
“At Nayeon. My sister.”
“I wasn’t staring.” You defended. “You haven’t blinked in like… 2 minutes." She laughed, “I was thinking…”
“Yeah, my sister.”
Before you could defend yourself, Nayeon wandered in wearing a t-shirt that was way too big for her and baggy sweats. Her usually shaggy hair was dampened from the shower she had just previously had. "What's going on?" Your best friend snorted, trying her hardest not to laugh out loud. "Nothing. Y/N's being weird." Nayeon’s eyes that you could stare into forever landed upon you, warm and curious. “Were you now?”
Your mouth suddenly forgot how it works, your mouth making indeceivable mouth movements.
"I—" She tilted her head, a small, mischievous smirk tugged at her lips. “...You okay?" Before you could think, you splattered, “Yeah, definitely!” You answered way too quickly; it felt abnormal. “Perfectly good. Amazing even.” You giggled nervously.
Nayeon let out a soft laugh, the kind that always managed to make your heart flip, embarrassing and dramatic. “Good.” She smiled. “I was worried you were buffering for a sec.” Your best friend bursts into laughter, “She totally was…” She said under her breath, which led you to roll your eyes just knowing she commented about the ongoing situation.
Nayeon walked over to the couch, absentmindedly drying the ends of her damp hair with the towel draped around her shoulders."What are you two watching?" She questioned, as she sat next to you out of all the empty seats, the one directly next to yours.
"Despicable Me, her favourite," your best friend answered. Nayeon gasped dramatically. "No way. You started it without me?" Your best friend rolled her eyes dramatically and moved her attention from the screen. "You literally said you were taking a shower."
You could smell the faint scent of her shampoo—something floral mixed with vanilla—and the warmth radiating from her shoulder was enough to make your brain short-circuit.
She teased, gently nudging your arm with her elbow. "S-Sorry." You shifted a few inches, nearly knocking your drink over in the process. "Careful." Nayeon reached out instinctively, steadying the cup before it spilt into your lap. "There." Her fingers brushed yours for the briefest second.
You were certain your heart had stopped.
A few hours later, your friend was snoring from across the room, “Y/n?” You looked up from your phone to see Nayeon in the hallway, keys twirling around her finger. “Wanna come pick up some dessert with me?”
“Oh…” You glanced toward your best friend, who was still sound asleep. “Okay.”
The drive was quiet, comfortable. The kind of silence that only came after years of knowing someone. You wandered around the shop looking for dessert. “This is your favourite, right?” Nayeon asked, holding it out in front of you. “Uh… yeah, how did-” She plops it in the basket that was being held by the crook of her elbow. She completely ignores you whilst looking for more dessert, which leaves you confused.
After buying dessert, the two of you wandered through a nearby park instead of heading straight home."It's nice out," You said, staring at the stars.
"It is…" Another comfortable silence settled between you.
Then— "Can I ask you something?" You cautiously nodded.
"When did you start avoiding me?" Your steps faltered. "...What?"
"You used to disappear whenever I came home."
"...You noticed?" She laughed softly. "Of course I noticed." You looked down at the pavement, nervously unsure of what to say next. "I thought you hated me."
"Hated you?"
"You always looked terrified whenever I talked to you."
"I was." She stopped walking.
Her smile was gentler than you'd ever seen it. "I thought it was because you didn't like me." You blinked. "What?"
"So I tried talking to you more."
"...You did?"
"Mhm."
"The cake... I made it because your friend told me it was your favourite."
"The movie nights?"
"I wanted an excuse to spend time with you."
"...The hot chocolate?"
"I remembered how you liked it."You stared at her, unsure of what she was trying to get across to you; your brain had trouble trying to even process it. "I've had a crush on you for years, Y/N."
"...What?" You laughed in disbelief.
"I've been in love with you since I was eighteen…" You shyly admitted to looking anywhere but at her. "I know."
"You... knew?"
"I had a suspicion."
"Since when?" Nayeon smiled. "You remember when my sister caught you staring at me during her 19th birthday party?”
"...Please don't remind me."
"I figured it out that night."
"You were adorable." You covered your face with both hands, using it as the only barrier you had, hiding away from these emotions that exploded. "I can never look you in the eye again." You complained with a sigh. Then suddenly, warm fingers gently wrapped around your wrist, pulling your hands away. When you finally looked up, she was smiling at you in that same way she had the day you'd first met.
Soft.
Warm.
Fond.
"So..." She squeezed your hand. "Would you let me take you on a proper date?"
Your answer came before your brain had a chance to overthink it. “...I'd love that." She leaned forward just enough to press a gentle kiss to your forehead. "I've been waiting a long time to do that." You laughed.
"So have I."
When you got back 40 minutes later, your best friend was still flat out asleep on the sofa, dribbling on the pillow. “We should probably take her to bed,” you suggest, which Nayeon agrees with. She lifts her and makes her way up the stairs, with you following behind.
You stood in the doorway of your best friend’s bedroom, admiring Nayeon’s muscles and the way they flexed when softly laying her down on her pillow, leading with Nayeon tucking her in bed.
“Goodnight. I should probably get some sleep too…” You say on the verge of yawning. “Please. Come with me?” She begged and looked at you with those eyes that you could not resist. “To your bedroom…?”
“Please…”
“Fine.”You smiled. She grabbed your hand, fingers intertwined with yours, leading you to her bedroom. As soon as you entered, you were greeted with her shoving some of her pyjamas in your face. “Wear these, you’ll be a lot more comfortable.”
In which you do so. You get changed, with Nayeon facing the opposite way, of course.
You both slide into her bed sheets, finding a spot to get comfortable, and yet she drags you to her side, your head plopping onto her chest. Your hand finds a spot on her upper torso, you become heated, your face feels warm, and you feel fuzzy all over. The cherry on top was a kiss to the forehead and a soft, “goodnight.”
Tired, you fell asleep before Nayeon.
“Goodnight, sweetheart. I wish you the sweetest of dreams…” She whispered, laying another short and sweet kiss upon your forehead.

there is a lot of exclusionary and divisive trans discourse on this website these days in the midst of it all it can be hard for some people to remember we are all one community and as a result we neglect important conversations we should likely rather be having so today i want to talk about 2S identities both for education and positivity and to talk for a bit about how colonialism has changed the way we talk about gender
✨two spirit appreciation post ✨
first lets talk about what 2 spirit and why the term is important
a lot of people here on turtle island tend to have very black and white perspectives on sex and gender and gendered roles in american society but when people say gender is a social construct thats not just a catchy slogan it is something purposefully constructed that changes over time with societal values and it is a fairly new social construct especially within the context of turtle island
before colonization the social values held around gender sex and gender roles held by the people indigenous to this land were incredibly varied and complex and specific to each groups cultural and spiritual beliefs and values but they were overwhelmingly beliefs that not only viewed sex and gender as complex and fluid but celebrated those born with complex relationships with sex and gender and saw them as important spiritual members of their communities
after colonization indigenous people were killed en masse and separated children from their families in order to force their children into boarding schools because only through force and violence could colonizers make it seem as if their own cultural and societal values were not only normal and rational but righteous and moral
if sex and gender were truly binary and men belonged at the top of our societal hierarchy naturally and women were made to be subservient to men if these were truly normal civilized and natural ways of viewing the world it would not require genocide in order to enforce it
2 spirit describes an anti colonial movement within indigenous communities in attempt to form community around indigenous spiritual and cultural beliefs around sex and gender based on their own cultural and religious histories
2 spirit typically describes someone who holds both feminine and masculine spirits simultaneously but it has a wide range of meanings related to individual cultural beliefs
2 spirit is a term for indigenous people based on the history of indigenous peoples and only indigenous people can claim this identity
while the vast array of experiences 2 spirit can describe have existed long before colonization and have deep roots in each respective culture the term 2 spirit itself was coined by Anishinaabe elder Myra Laramee in 1990 During the Third Annual Intertribal Native American, First Nations, Gay and Lesbian American Conference the term 2 spirit comes from the Anishnaabemowin term niizh manidoowag which literally translates to two-spirits
not all 2 spirit people consider themselves trans or even queer and as these spiritual and cultural beliefs long outdate the modern trans or queer communities its frankly completely understandable as these identities are a natural part of their own culture
the issues 2 spirit indigenous people face and their issues are absolutely issues important to and similar to the struggles of trans people as a whole not only are 2 spirit identities counter to american beliefs about sex and gender and as a result gender expression in 2 spirit indigenous people specifically is often punished but gender expression within indigenous communities even outside of 2 spirit peoples is often punished by american patriarchy as american views around sex and gender are structurally imperialist euro centric and white supremacist and has no allowance for cultural diversity in terms of sex and gender
the laws and policies around sex and gender that disadvantage women at the expense of men that punish diversity in gender expression and identity are antithetical to many indigenous peoples core cultural and spiritual values and decolonizing our views around sex and gender is incredibly important for us to do within our own queer communities
2 spirit as a term also isnt meant to replace other terms from indigenous communities that describe cultural spiritual and historical beliefs around sex gender and gender expectations and there are many terms that are used to describe fluidity in gender and gender roles in their respective cultures such as
agokwe agokwe-nini okitcitakwe and ogokwe in Anishinaabemowin
etuijijaqimijinui'k and l'nuk in Mi'kmaq
nàdleehé in Dine or Navajo
aayahkwew Înahpîkasoht napêhkân iskwewak napêw iskwêwisêhot and iskwêw ka napêwayat in Cree and Plains Cree
winyanktehca winkte winkta and wintike in Dakota
sipiniq arnaasiaq angutaasiaq and choupan in Inuktitut
tuučuk and čakusšƛ in Nuuh-chah-nulth
titqattek in Ktunaxa
aakíí’skassi in Siksikáí’powahsin
miáti in Hidatsa
and many many more
2 spirit people across tribes and cultures and religions you belong in our community
trans people should absolutely be fighting for the rights and issues of indigenous folks but especially for those of our 2 spirit siblings
the trans community could absolutely learn quite a few things from 2 spirit elders about sex and gender and how to deconstruct our views around them
anti colonialism and anti imperialism are trans issues
and a world where first nations and inuit peoples have sovereignty over their own lands is one that benefits us all especially as queer people
i am not indigenous myself and while i think 2 spirit identities are really important in discussions of the trans community as their beliefs around sex and gender and gender expectations and roles far predate modern concepts of the trans community or even the queer community at large as we understand it today it is not my place to define these terms and thats why im not a lot of the information used in this post is based primarily on the information found on sites like these as well as descriptions and discussions of 2 spirit identity and community weve heard from actual 2 spirit people in our own community https://w2sa.ca/two-spirit-library/understanding-the-term-two-spirit https://www.theindigenousfoundation.org/articles/the-history-of-two-spirit-folks https://waapihk.com/2025/06/07/histories-of-two-spirit-identity/
