Capture of the walls of Le Quesnoy, France. Painting by George Edmund Butler, 1920. It depecits the New Zealand Rifle Brigade using ladders to scale the town's fortification #OTD Nov 4 1918, a week before WWI ended. Lieutenant Leslie Averill, the 4th Battalionn's intelligence officer, led a group over the wall and forced the 1,000 strong Imperial German garrison to quickly surrender.

Le Quesnoy was an ancient French town that had been held by the Germans for almost the entire war, but was liberated by New Zealanders a few days before the end of World War One. Though the city was surrounded by medieval walls surmounted by machine-guns, New Zealand troops found a less-well defended section of wall and brought up a 30 ft. ladder. Despite being under heavy fire, they ascended in single file and captured the town, taking the German soldiers and their artillery prisoner. Out of gratitude, the towns people renamed various parts of Le Quesnoy after NZ troops, including a children’s school.

Ici, l'église Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, de style Classique. Les vitraux Art Déco montrent des symboles ésotériques (la Tour d'ivoire, l'Etoile du Matin,...). Quant à la pierre tombale, c'est celle de Barbe de Nebra, abbesse de l'ancienne Abbaye Sainte-Elisabeth du Quesnoy (1637)
