SUBLIME CINEMA #286 - HAVE A NICE DAY
This pulpy Chinese film is unlike much I’ve seen before; it’s been compared to Tarantino, for its dark irreverent humor, random acts of violence and gangland storyline, only the animation is so off-kilter against the story being told that something heightened comes across here, and after seeing it, I can’t really imagine it told another way. Had the movie been told ‘straight’, with real actors and camerawork, it would still be awesome, but rendering it all into drawing gives it a comedically light touch that is really something else. Have a Nice Day is more transgressive comic book than anime or Pixar, it’s dark and hilarious.
