Local election 2014 - the fallout
So the dust has hardly settled don't the election boxes and already we have the first major casualty of #le14 - Eamon Gilmore. This was always on the cards but just not cards that the Government in particular the Labour Party, we're reading. So where did it all go wrong? We'll many of Eamon Gilmore critics are saying that since his move to Foreign Affairs he had become detached from local issues. Before the general election Gilmore had become a very vocal opponent of the government but had become less prominent in the public's mind since taking up office in leafier suburbs. A fact that hardcore Labour supporters from working class Dublin had come to take note. Issues of increasing austerity, corruption and a lack of hope among the public boiled over on Friday with Pat Rabitte admitting today that the Water Charges are a tax too far. So what next? We'll the election is now considerably closer perhaps by as much as six months. The government may not even last that long with confidence in Enda Kenny now seriously diminished. A cabinet reshuffle may be akin to rearranging deck chairs on the titanic. So it might be time to start manning the lifeboats. With the emergence of Sinn Fein and Independents many wonder of they will be capable of all rowing in the same direction .... Or just going round in circles? Time will tell.
