Why do actors and actresses, after a successful show, get stuck on their only success? beginners luck?

that is, we have Taylor Lautner, because he valued himself too much in terms of money. Ian Somerhalder? he is a good actor but he also got stuck.

Jensen? he has talent but instead of wanting to grow more, he decided to keep the legacy of the supernatural.

What should they do to keep growing more?

What is the difference between them and Jared?

The short answer is most of the successful actor and singers are also good businesspeople i.e. Taylor Swift.  Actors has to treat their careers the way a lawyer or doctor nurtures their practice.  They have a brand, a product (their ability to tell stories), customers (directors and producers) and they know to market themselves (get auditions), they know how to sell themselves (execute those auditions), and they know how to collect their money and hire salespeople (agents and managers) to bring them more business. To put it bluntly, Jared is a good businessman, Jensen ....not as much.

Sometimes actors are burned out. Being on a hit tv series or movie franchise is a lot of work that may last several years. So, they take a break and even go to school. But Hollywood waits for nobody and if they tried to return to acting it's even more of an uphill battle because younger actors have already replaced them.

Most times networks and studios believe only a small number of actors with name recognition and status that can carry a tv show, so networks are all competing for the same small number of actors.  Producers are looking to put proverbial ‘asses in the seats’ to watch the content, this means producers demand that casting directors focus on actors that they feel will bring their already established fan base for the ride.  Hence, the Lists, called Shortlist by others.

If the casting director is convinced that an actor can be a star but producers and directors aren’t ready for them, then the casting director may try to build the actor up in supporting roles to create exposure.   I’ve mentioned here before that sometimes managers or agents don’t want their clients in supporting roles and it cost their clients exposure and heat that could have helped them transition to lead roles.  When actors called me to ask why I stopped bringing them in on the shows and films our company cast, I can hear their gut getting punched when I tell them that it was their agents or managers who were not pitching them for our company’s projects anymore.

Then there are producers and directors (mis)casting their favorite actors for lead roles unsuited to their skill levels i.e. Joss Wheldon created The Dollhouse for Eliza Dushku and ruined her career for 10 years.

There's been a lot of speculation on Jensen preparing himself for another role after SPN ends, where do you see him going/doing post SPN? He has played Dean for so long, and he hasn't had many roles since 2009. Do you think the CW will cast him in other roles in their sister shows like they tried to do with other CW actors? Jared was able to refresh himself with the Gilmore Girls revival, but he seems to be saying he is done with acting. Where would Jared be able to go post SPN?

I think Jensen will have no problem getting guest or even regular gigs on CW’s other shows, the question is if he’s willing to travel to and work in Vancouver again.  I believe the private jet technically belongs to Jared who may sell it when SPN ends.  If a producer builds a show around Jensen’s strength then he can be a lead, however failure rate for new shows is 98%.  Even if a show reaches 88 episode there’s no guarentee that it will succeed in syndication.  Award winning Murphy Brown failed in syndication and dvd sales, making it an odd choice for a revival.   You know how I feel about streaming services but with his high social media followings, Jensen can demand a substantial paycheck to star in a streaming service movie or series.

While I think Jared’s retirement story is just a nice story to tell his fans, I do believe he’s burned out.  Most leads in his position don’t want to lead another network series again, Ellen Pompeo was public about that sentiment but admits she also has the luxury of not wanting to do that again. Lead TV actors are under enormous crushing pressure to make back the $100 million the network sunk into the pilot seasons, then they’re under different pressure to stay on the show so cast and crew have jobs because most shows get cancelled when they lose their lead.  Jared may take a short break and look for more ventures to invest in.
