I enjoy reading your anipoke headcanons. How did Gary and Leaf fall in love? (Sorry if this comes off as nosy...)

It’s not nosy at all! I enjoy answering questions.

I like the idea that Gary, Leaf, and Ash all grew up together & were friends in Pallet, but they follow their separate paths as they start their journeys (Ash becoming a Pokemon Master, Gary becoming a Pokemon Researcher, Leaf doing whatever Pokemon-related nonsense you hc she does, etc.)

Gary and Leaf’s paths cross again at some point in their journey, and they rekindle their friendship. They come to appreciate the other’s ability to keep them on their toes—socially and intellectually. I see Gary and Leaf as being equally snarky and smart, even if in different ways. This means they don’t take each other’s shit, which can cause them to butt heads. Most of their banter is ultimately playful in nature, though, and they can both dish it and take it.

As for how they fall in love… I imagine Gary has a tendency to flirt (Leaf can, too, but Gary especially), so there’s a romantic undercurrent to their relationship long before they actually are in a romantic relationship. That makes it tough for Leaf to judge when and whether Gary is actually serious about her, and he’s too cool to be direct. However, Leaf has no problem being direct once she figures out what she wants, so I can easily imagine her eventually confronting him and asking him outright. He might get flustered but confess he is actually into her, and that’s all she wrote.

Gary & Leaf scene during the time of Johto.

I have this scene in my head that while Gary was traveling in Johto he runs into Leaf and she doesn’t travel with him or anything but they do meet up and of course after some “catching up” if you can can call some comments that.

They have a one on one battle. And she wins.

Now he’s stunned cause first he’s actually been training really hard and not even like he thinks he’s gonna win every battle but he learned a thing or two after the indigo league. But Leaf? He’s just now really embarrassed she took him out! Even though he doesn’t know how hard she’s been training or anything cause the last time they saw eachother was when they were getting their starter Pokémon.

Also the next time they meet his Eevee before it evolves really likes her and she happily catches it when it leaps into her arms and she starts tickling its belly. And Gary’s still stunned.

I have meant to write a short thing for this about certain run ins with Gary and Leaf like deleted scenes in Johto with mentions of Ash but honestly I don’t know if I’ll ever get around to it. So you can have this.
