The frying pan slammed onto the metal ring of the burners, sending oil spitting out onto Hughie's forearms. He forced himself to take a nice, deep breath, through the pain, through the anger, even if his hand was still gripping the pan handle with a white knuckle grip. If the V was still in his system, he might have left dents in it. It might be satisfying. What he really wanted was to fling the frying pan right at Soldier Boy's face, but not only would that be a waste of food and a frying pan, it wouldn't exactly help the tentative alliance he and Butcher had formed.

Hughie turned to look over at Soldier Boy, resisting the urge to tell him to cook his own damn meals if he knew how to do it so perfectly. It was hard to keep the bigger picture in mind when he was 99% sure his relationship with his girlfriend was fucked, the V made him feel like shit, the world was on fire and the guy he was spending so much of his time with was an insufferable piece of shit. "How do you want it done?" Hughie asked, ironing out the creases of irritation from his voice as best he could- though he was pretty sure Soldier boy could tell he was still pissed.

     𝗮  𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁  𝗼𝗳  𝗵𝗲𝗿  𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄  𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁  𝗮𝗿𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴  𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵  𝗵𝗶𝗺  𝘄𝗮𝘀  𝗮  𝗯𝗮𝗱  𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮,     he  was  extremely  unpredictable  right  now  and  maggie  knew  that  she  should  be  more  careful,  she  didn't  need  to  keep  testing  him  and  seeing  how  far  he  would  go.     john  had  already  proved  that  he  had  no  issues  with  hurting  her  children,  she  still  hadn't  been  able  to  forget  that  moment  where  tilly  had  pushed  negan  aside  only  to  get  hurt  herself  and  she  never  wanted  to  see  that  again.     but  the  separation  from  her  children,  from  negan,  it  wasn't  doing  her  any  good  and  whilst  she  knew  this  was  what  she  had  to  do  to  keep  them     𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲,     she  wasn't  happy  about  it.     her  family  was  everything  to  her,  not  being  able  to  see  her  kids  every  day  was  heartbreaking  and  it  was  all  because  of  him.     what  did  he  expect?     for  her  to  be  all  happy  and  smiles?     not  going  to  happen.

     𝘀𝗵𝗲  𝗵𝗮𝗱  𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻  𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴  𝘁𝗼  𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲  𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳  𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺  𝘁𝗵𝗲  𝗮𝗿𝗴𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁,     not  wanting  to  argue  with  him  anymore  because  if  she  continued  to  stay,  she  would  say  something  she  can't  take  back  and  she  had  people  she  loves  to  protect.     but  she  should've  known  that  he  wouldn't  just  let  her  leave,  blocking  her  path  and  causing  her  to  stop,  not  looking  at  him  as  he  questioned  her  about  negan.     maggie  knew  if  she  even  answered  his  question,  he  would  be     𝗳𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀     with  the  answer  and  that  would  only  put  negan  in  more  danger.     there  was  no  answer  that  he  would  like,  none  that  would  make  him  feel  good  and  that  would  be  so  many  lies,  which  he'd  be  able  to  tell  that  she  was  lying.     instead  she  just  keeps  her  head  held  high,  trying  not  to  look  intimidated  as  he  circled  her,  jaw  set  in  a  hard  line  as  she  kept  her  eyes  looking  forward.     but  there  was  no  denying  the  way  her  heart  was  beating  hard,  the  fact  she  had  to  make  the  effort  to  keep  her  breathing  calm  and  she  could  already  feel     𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁  𝗼𝗿  𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁     starting  to  kick  in.

     𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻  𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀  𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸  𝘂𝗽  𝗮𝘁  𝗵𝗶𝗺  𝗮𝘀  𝗵𝗲  𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀  𝗶𝗻  𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁  𝗼𝗳  𝗵𝗲𝗿,     keeping  her  expression  neutral  as  she  tried  to  read  the  expression  on  his  face.     it  had  been  years  since  she  had  let  herself  be  alone  with  him,  after  she  had  left  all  those  years  ago  there  had  been  no  reason  to  stay  in  contact,  she  hadn't  liked  what  she  was  seeing  from  him  and  she  refused  to  stand  by  the  man  he  was  becoming.     but  a  part  of  her  couldn't  help  to  wonder  if  she  hadn't  walked  away,  would  he  even  be  the  man  he  is  now?     maggie  couldn't  think  like  that,  before  he  came  back  into  her  life  like  this,  her  life  was  amazing  and  she  wouldn't  trade  it  for  anything.     she  had  a  beautiful  man  who  loved  her,  who  saw  her  for  who  she  really  is  and  would  do  anything  for  her.     her  two  amazing  children  were  her  life,  the  reason  she  was  even  standing  here  in  front  of  him  because  she  wouldn't  let  him  hurt  her  children.     it  takes  a  lot  in  her  to  not     𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵     away  from  his  touch.     maggie  had  to  be  smart  about  this,  if  she  was  going  to  play  this  game  with  him,  she  was  going  to  have  to  try  to  play  by  his  rules  for  a  little  bit.

     𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗲  𝗹𝗲𝘁  𝗼𝘂𝘁  𝗮  𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁  𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵,     looking  down  for  a  moment  and  she  nods  her  head,  teeth  pulling  on  her  bottom  lip.     it  was  never  in  her  nature  to  play  meek  and  submissive,  she  had  always  been  bold  and     𝗳𝗲𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘆     without  her  powers  and  having  to  learn  endure  the  pain  she  does,  she  never  backed  down  from  anything.     except  she  knew  if  she  was  actually  going  to  keep  the  people  she  loves  safe,  that  may  be  exactly  how  she  needs  to  play  it  for  a  little  while,     "     you're  right,  i'm  sorry,     "     maggie  apologised,  hands  curling  into  fists  for  a  moment,  nails  digging  into  her  skin  for  a  moment.     before  she  lets  out  another  sigh,  hands  uncurling  as  she  looks  up  at  him,  forcing  a  smile  onto  her  face,     "     i've  not  been  very  fair  to  you  and  that  is  so  wrong  of  me,     "     she  hated  every  word  out  of  her  mouth,  she  didn't  even  care  if  it  was  obvious  how  much  she  was  forcing  it,  but  she  would  try  her  best  to  keep  things  calm,  if  it  meant  everyone  she  loved  was  safe  from  him.     a  hand  comes  up  to  cup  one  of  his  cheeks  as  she  leans  up  to  press  a  kiss  to  his  cheek.     all  she  wanted  to  do  was  rip  him  apart  for  threatening  her  kids  and  negan,  but  instead  she  had  to  just  be  patient  and  do  what  she  had  to  do  in  order  to  keep  them  all  safe,     "     we're  not  gonna  fight  the  whole  time,  that  would  just  be  miserable  for  both  of  us,     "     maggie  promised,  dropping  her  hand  from  his  face  and  letting  it  rest  on  his  chest  as  she  kept  the  smle  on  her  face,     "     consider  the  atittude  gone,  no  more,  i  promise,     "

     𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬  𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧'𝐭  𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲  𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐡𝐚𝐝  𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭  𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝  𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧,     she  didn't  actually  expect  to  ever  feel  anything  for  someone  else  again  and  she  fully  intended  to  never  let  that  happen  again.     feeling  for  someone  was  a  sure  fire  way  to  get  hurt.     they  could  be  used  against  you,  make  you  act  in  a  way  that  didn't  always  serve  you  best  and  they  were  a  complication  that  you  didn't  need.     losing  elena  the  way  she  did,  she  told  herself  that  falling  in  love  was  dangerous  and  she  would  never  let  herself  get  attached  again.     then  along  came  fucking  soldier  boy.     the  two  of  them  seemed  to  have  a  similar  way  of  dealing  with  things,  constantly  prepared  to  throw  themselves  into  a  fight  and  liked  to  numb  themselves  in  whatever  way  was  easiest  at  the  time.     she  hadn't  expected  it,  but  the  sex  was  a  good  way  to     𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭     herself  from  all  the  shit  that  was  going  on  with  ares  and  his  so  called  seven.     but  watching  him  get  redressed,  she  was  struck  with  this  sudden  need  to  now  be  alone  again  and  she  spoke  up  before  she  could  stop  herself.     fuck,  when  did  he  make  her  weak  like  this?     she  didn't  look  away,  keeping  her  eyes  on  him  as  she  exhaled  smoke  from  the  last  of  her  cigarette,  heart  racing  in  her  chest  as  she  almost  expected  him  to  walk  away.

     𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲  𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞  𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞  𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞  𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧  𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫  𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝  𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞  𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝,     but  what  she  hadn't  expected  was  the  way  they  understood  each  other.     it  had  been  something  she  had  always  wanted,  someone  who  saw  her,  understood  her  and  doesn't  look  away.     which  was  exactly  what  she  got  with  soldier  boy  ben.     they  trained  and  fought  together,  they  fucked  and  found  some  comfort  in  each  other.     she  was  helping  him  catch  up  on  the  past  forty  years  that  he  had  missed,  she  seemed  to  be  the  only  one  somewhat     𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭     enough  to  actually  deal  with.     maybe  it  was  the  years  of  dealing  with  homelander's  temper  and  mood  swings  that  made  her  capable  of  helping  ben  like  this.     except  ben  was  amusing,  making  her  smile  when  he  probably  shouldn't  and  the  two  of  them  were  never  far  from  one  another.     though  she  was  sure  hughie  probably  wished  the  two  of  them  would  have  a  falling  out  so  they  didn't  keep  picking  on  him  so  much,  but  it  was  a  lot  of  fun.

     𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲  𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞  𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭  𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐚𝐭  𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡  𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫,     her  heart  was  beating  so  loudly  it  felt  like  it  could  drown  out  anything  else  and  she  never  felt  more  exposed.     but  she  couldn't  deny  it  anymore,  not  to  herself  and  not  to  him.     she  didn't  want  to  be  apart  from  him,  she  preferred  it  when  he  was  around  and  as  much  as  she  told  herself  that  she  would  not  allow  herself  to  have  feelings,  she  clearly  had  lost  that  fight.     but  maybe  this  time,  they  would  look  out  for  each  other,  she  had  someone  to  fight     𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞     and  she  would  do  whatever  she  had  to  make  sure  she  didn't  lose  anyone  again.     maeve  smiles  softly  as  he  tells  her  he's  not  going  anywhere,  leaning  over  to  put  out  the  last  of  her  cigarette  on  the  ashtray  before  letting  herself  get  tangled  up  with  him.     she  sighed  softly,  eyes  closing  for  a  moment  at  the  feeling  of  him  drawing  shapes  into  her  skin,  foreheads  pressed  together  and  she  smiled  again,  blue  eyes  opening  to  look  at  him,     "     and  i've  got  you,     "

     𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠  𝐭𝐨  𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝  𝐨𝐧  𝐡𝐢𝐬  𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭,     she  didn't  exactly  know  what  else  to  say  because  she  had  never  really  been  the  good  one  with  words  or  dealing  with  emotions.     she  didn't  know  what  to  say,  she  didn't  know  if  she  had  to  say     𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠     because  whatever  was  happening  here,  it  was  real  and  clearly  they  were  both  done  acting  like  this  was  just  sex,     "     when  i  sent  butcher  and  his  little  gang  of  idiots  to  russia  looking  for  the  weapon  that  killed  you  so  that  we  could  try  to  kill  that  fucker  ares,  i  didn't  know  they  were  gonna  find  you,     "     maeve  admitted,  looking  up  at  him,  her  hand  on  his  chest.     fuck,  did  this  mean  she  had  to  be  somewhat  grateful  to  butcher  for  bringing  ben  into  her  life?     no  way  that  was  fucking  happening.     she  sent  them  there  and  she  was  the  one  who  looked  out  for  him  more  than  the  others.     she  was  getting  soft  as  she  was  getting  old,  all  the  shit  that  ares  was  doing  was  making  her  feel  more  like  a  human  than  ever  before,     "     whatever  happens  with  all  of  this     -     we  have  to  stick  together,  you  and  i,  promise  me  that?     "
