Thoughts on Being a "Baby Swimmer"
When my Running Buddy and I first started to run we referred to ourselves as "Baby Runners" in comparison to other more experienced runners. It was a way to make clear to ourselves and those around us that we were new and needed guidance. It worked. In running groups we were never short of folks who were willing to guide, teach, and be patient with us. The support of those runners during my "Baby Runner" days is part of the reason I have continued to run.
Now I'm embarking on being a "Baby Swimmer".
Through a strange twist of fate I never learned to swim. I can keep myself afloat and even swim a distance without looking like a complete fool, but it's not quite a enough if I want to compete in triathlons someday. So at the age of 27 I'm getting in the pool and learning how to really swim. I have a great teacher that I'm meeting with once a week for a while and am committed to practicing between sessions, so I can finally learn how to swim.
As I "swam" through my first solo practice I couldn't help comparing being a "Baby Runner" to a "Baby Swimmer". Here are some of my thoughts:
Getting water up your nose is way worse than sucking eggs.
Running is a way more natural thing than swimming.
Learning to breath and run is one thing. Learning to breath and swim is another.
Putting aside a fear of water getting up your nose is way harder to overcome at 27 than at 4.
Feeling like the lifeguard is watching you as a possible drowning victim is nerve wracking.
Even though I know it's clear that I'm a "Baby Swimmer" I still wish I could tell the other people in the pool.
There's not nearly as much support and guidance as a "Baby Swimmer". Maybe it's the buoy ropes or all that water, but swimming is not a social thing.
All in all, being a "Baby Swimmer" is not the awesome experience I had as a "Baby Runner". But, all the support I got then did help turn me into an athlete, so I'll get back into that pool and sputter and flail as a "Baby Swimmer" until I get this whole swimming thing.
