Early Childhood Montessori at Home - Folding
Folding is a wonderful Montessori exercise in building independence, confidence and fine motor skills, by utilizing an everyday object, cloth.
Not only will this activity help children develop a better sense of muscular control, it also provides a lesson in exactness and rigor, laying the foundations for later geometry work.
There are a number of different folding exercises contained within the tray. The child will trace their finger along the seams, highlighting where the fold will occur. They will then carefully fold the cloth, along the seams, receiving the visual confirmation they need to know they are completing the task.
Once the child has successfully folded the squares of cloth, they will place them at the top right of the table, where the others lay, proceeding to work on the next one in the series.
Beyond the work found on the Practical Life shelf, children also fold laundry items used in the classroom, such as napkins and hand towels, building independence, confidence, and fine motor skills.

PETER POTAMUS: I'll have to admit this much ... what I'm about to mention is in keeping with something of an old tradition of sorts in my family.
MOI: Do tell ...
PETER POTAMUS: My own late father, Perry Potamus, began inviting me aboard his Magic Balloon at an early age ... and I do admit learning much from him. He was quick to sense I had a sense of curiosity and wanderlust practically from the start!
MOI: Which speaks well for you, I have to admit.
PETER POTAMUS: And especially in discovering such remote and isolated parts of Polynesia whose knowledge is known pretty much but to myself--and maybe a few friends as well. A Polynesia naked and unafraid, you might say ... close to nature, and then some!
MOI: No doubt rather fascinating right there!
PETER POTAMUS: And even with my inheriting my father's Magic Balloon after his death from a Rare Tropical Disease, I acknowledge still clinging to that sense of wanderlust shown me by my father ... and trying to find someone with whom I could share it with with an eye towards keeping the flame lit when the time comes.
MOI: Hopefully a close relative.
PETER POTAMUS: However did you guess? (Chuckling) At any rate, may I just introduce you to ... my rather darling niece, Pam Potamus!
[Whereupon our gal, perhaps close to eight years of age, comes over wearing a somewhat eclectic tankini--and a smile of satisfaction.]
MOI, trying to blend in: And how do you do, Pam?
PAM POTAMUS, herself rather bemused at what's ensuing: I'm rather excited to meet you ... and my uncle Peter!
PETER POTAMUS: I chose Pam as my next companion in the spirit of my late father to show her that girls are practically capable of doing anything they set their hearts and minds upon, that the world is practically her oyster--and perhaps even the pearl, come to think of it!
MOI, somewhat awe-struck: I presume she's going to be taught diving underwater, if not already.
PAM POTAMUS: You might be surprised that I've already started taking lessons, and can dive down to about 50 feet!
MOI: I find it rather amazing for a gal of your age to be able to dive that deep!
PETER POTAMUS: You might like to know where she's taken dive lessons off Catalina Island ... and by no less than the Catalina Diving Clowder, who certainly KNOW their diving in a rather amazing dive spot like Catalina!
MOI: Pam ... I just hope you know what you're doing.
PAM POTAMUS: Who wouldn't? And besides ... I can't help but look forward to my first journey with Uncle Peter off to romantic Polynesia, and I just can't wait to experience the diving there!
PETER POTAMUS: Yep, I can't help but feel proud for my niece being able to come along aboard the Magic Balloon, just as I did joining my father all those years ago....
MOI: You couldn't have said better!
