I’ve refined my character creation explanation for the fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons... In this order.
Race is determines your genetic disposition (The Nature) towards certain Ability Score traits and usually offers a few useful bonuses..Â
Background is your upbringing and what you were doing before you became an adventurer (The Nurture). It determines a couple of your skills and  you get a feature from it that could come in handy. It also helps with getting into character.Â
Class is your role in the adventuring party (The Now). This has the biggest affect on gameplay and how you play your character. Classes are eventually broken down into archetypes (subclasses) that help make you unique.Â
Ability Scores are your stats. (The Numbers) You'll want to allocate these to match with your class (unless you are really really into roleplaying [i wouldn't recommend for first timer]). They are adjusted slightly by your race.
