So.... word of recommendation..... never decide your shoes meant for work are ugly as sin. You end up with a passion project that you end up dreading starting on the other shoe. I love how this turned out, but daaaang, it sucks to try to paint each little detail! I was going to paint these with Sky: Children of the Light as my theme, but I painted over it when I got inspired by Gachiakuta.

BECAUSE I GET ASKED ABOUT PAINTING ON LEATHER WITH IMPRESSIVE FREQUENCY.

I bought new Docs with the specific intent of painting on them, and tried something new and (gasp) tried to photograph some of the progress.

Step one—Make stencils! I struggle with typography so I found a font I liked and measured the toes of the boots, and cut them out. I also have graphite transfer paper on hand.

Step two— line it up with the transfer paper underneath. If you don’t have any, coat the back of the stencil with a bunch of graphite from an HB or softer pencil.

Step three— trace it with a firm hand. Mechanical pencil is a little better, and press hard, try to keep the stencil from slipping.

Step four— the impressions are faint so you have to be careful! I bought Leather Studio paint and this is my first time trying it; I’ve used regular craft acrylic with good results before.

Step five— paint!! I had to go slowly and draw the lettering as much if not more than write it. I kept the stencil close on hand when the impressions weren’t easy to see.

Other bits I freehanded with a dry brush technique, and they’re still a work in progress.

Hope this gives people ideas and please stop asking about what paint I use on leather since it’s been asked more times than I can count 😅

So I'm thinking about spraypainting some faux leather Doc Martin-type boots. This won't really be for cosplay, I'll be using them for everyday use. But do you have any recommendations for spraypaint that is light blue/sky blue but is also durable and waterproof?

Hello there!

What I would recommend isn’t spraypaint, but rather a leather paint. The difference is that leather paint is soft and flexible and can adhere well to the types of materials that shoes are made out of, where spray paint is not at all flexible and will flake off easily.

Angelus brand leather paint is very popular, comes in many colors, and can be purchased at most US craft stores, and the brand I would recommend.

If you absolutely have to spray paint, I would get Designmaster Colortool spray, which is meant for faux flowers, since it will be softer and more flexible than other spray paints, though it still won’t have quite the effect of a leather paint.
