Omg at people conflating lack of confidence with depression like??? Depression is many things and manifests in many ways. A person can be depressed without exhibiting a hallmark symptom like 'no energy to complete daily activities e.g. training.' A general common experience of depression is, however, an overwhelming hollow feeling, the inability to take PLEASURE in previous activities (which is canon for Viktor). Fixation on success & even triumph can fuel this! You can achieve while depressed

you can achieve while depressed. you can exert a lot of mental energy and effort in maintaining that success through the lack of passion that comes with depression. if success defines you, sometimes that’s all you have to keep going to keep up a level of normalcy - you have to keep being successful, so you just do what you need to do. that requires mental strength and fortitude because it’s tiring but being able to do that can mean both that you’re mentally ill and mentally strong.

Leathy's legs were propped up on the coffee table. His pinky nail worked away on a kernel stuck in the gum of his right fang while he watched Proohe furiously tear apart a well meaning bakers tarte tatin. The baker would be next. The TV was cranked high enough to drown out the dripping that served as the caverns incessant background noise, and then a bit more so he could ignore his cloister-neighbors requests for him to turn it down.

His palmhusk let out a ding. He absently reached to check who it was, expecting another former classmate pestering him for something or other. No, I can't come to that show, I'm back in the caverns. No, I can't help you study, I graduated last perigee, remember?

Instead, what he saw made him sit straight up. They got back to him already? His other hand blindly palmed around for the remote and paused the TV while the other unlocked the device and tapped into the Empire-sanctioned notifications app.

"GEE, THANKS!" his neighbor screamed.

He waited to make sure she was done chastising him, and then pressed into the alert.

He stared at it. That one line meant that in the eyes of the Empire, he would never be a doctor.

A quick scan of the rest offered nothing more than hyperlinks to other opportunities to serve the Empire.

He tightened. He sucked in his breath and wrung the phone in his hand. He should've waited. He could've retaken that class. That test. Maybe he should've paid that Fleet nut to edit his application. Why did he think he'd get in?

"FUCK!" He shot the husk across the block where it cracked on the cavern wall next to Prunes' frozen, devilish smile. He stood and crossed his arms over his forehead and stayed there. He choked back a sob and pulled in a sharp, shaking breath through his teeth.

I legally have to offer the combo of Odarem and Leathy just bc we've talked abt them possibly knowing each other and it compels me,

i have no idea what quad theyd be in and i am honestly not sure how they would interact directly... it could go diff ways but how we've discussed them meeting would def lend to uhh tension lol

i want to play w some dialogue between them... i think itd be inchresting...

Leathy and Gus.. 👊

gus. leathy likes to fight for fun & exercise, but he's not a killer if he doesn't have to be, and that makes him pull punches. he's also hasn't seriously fought anyone since losing his leg; he's not very fluid on his prosthetic (yet). unless leathy got a good punch in and knocked gus out quick (his usual approach), gus wins. gus is always in it 100% and he is scrappy scrappy scrappy nasty nasty nasty.

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

Leathy - Inferiority / inadequacy. Dude has a huge inferiority complex (specifically regarding his work and more specifically his intelligence) and is a stubborn brat about it. He thinks its a completely factual inferiority, and that those who challenge it are pitying him / lying for his benefit.

Alaska - Guilt. He's gotten good at justifying stuff to himself. So I guess he doesn't have trouble with it, he just deals with it badly.

🙈 SEE-NO-EVIL - whats a side of your oc that they don't want to show other people?

Leathy - He doesn't like to show others any of his self-resent or regret. He takes full responsibility for where he is and what he does and doesn't think his self deprecation is worth sharing with anyone.

Alaska - How calculating he is when he speaks with anyone and everyone and how self indulgent he is.

☄️ COMET - what do people assume about them? are they right?

Hard to speak for other peoples characters or peoples perspectives so this is going to be mostly how I believe / intend them to come across! Hopefully they do.

Leathy - I like to think he comes across as very go-with-the-flow, adaptable, and confident. And that's all true to a certain point, but where those all stop is a sharp, sharp drop.

Alaska - I think most people assume he's smart, earnest, and genuinely has all his patients best interests at heart. One of those things is true.
