Not that other Anon, but I'm worried about my bird because I'll be going off to college soon, and I'm really the only one that takes care of him. My family isn't very willing to play with my bird or make accommodations for him and I'm worried I'll have to call every day to even remind them to feed him. My bird is my whole world to me, but I'm worried about the stress of moving and dormitory environment for him, if they even allow birds at all.

Congrats on heading off to college! It’s an exciting time in your life, though I understand completely being worried about your bird. 

What kind of bird is he? Most dormitories do not allow pets apart from fish, but if you can move out of the dorm into a local apartment within a semester or two, this gives you more wiggle room. If he’s a small bird, landlords may be more accommodating, and if you start researching things early, you can possibly find a place that allows birds by then. This would allow you to minimize the time apart from the bird.

I would start by sitting your family down and talking to them honestly about how important this is to you. Let them know you want the bird to be happy and that the bird being happy is vital to your own happiness. Talk to them about what the bird will need in terms of daily care; feeding, cage maintenance, etc. Make a list of things the bird absolutely cannot go without and emphasize them.

I will say I got my budgie when I was living in campus housing. The only reason(s) I got away with it was that the house was just that, a house, and not a dorm (but we were not supposed to have pets besides fish), and I knew a person who was an R.A., and she warned me when there would be inspections. There was an instance where I put my bird in the car and drove around for a half hour while they searched for illegal booze (it was a dry campus). It’s risky to do that—I was fortunate enough to be less than an hour from home and so had the option to take Nim home when needed—and I do not recommend it, if only because it causes unnecessary stress. 

If you do get an apartment, make sure any potential roomies are OK with the bird first.
